Congrats on the new ride, Mistress. It'll be a blast to drive. Now you'll have to check out Jazmine Sullivan's song "Bust your windows". Strange, angry song, but the artists' name fits.

Will do, thanks.

two thoughts:

1) mistress stock going up in my book (and i am single:D)
2) i do like the sl - in all incarnations - but i see mostly women and gay guys driving them here in lala land. (not that there's, uh, anything wrong with being a woman, or yes.. anyway, what does that make me, ...the exception that proves the rule...?) (i hope)

Who cares what anybody else thinks? If YOU like 'em, get one. Life's too short to worry about what everybody else thinks. Or you can move to the East Coast. Women and gay guys don't seem to have a monopoly on the SLs here. One of these days, I intend to have one of those bad boys!

Definitely GET ONE!

Suprisingly, the one vehicle we owned that cost us the least amount in maintenance (most performed by yours truly)...most expensive outlay on the SL...TIRES!!!

Age is what drove us to sell...no, not the car, rather us.

Wifey's bad knees made getting in and out of the low-slung vehicle increasingly difficult. And the lack of rear seating seemed unrealistic for our needs as the toddler fast became a teen!

But what a looker it was back then:

That looks just like Jasmine! Except for the chrome wheels, it looks identical. Schweet!

I found it easier to get my legs in and out of the SLK than the SL, even though the SL is the bigger of the two cars.

I pretty much quit giving a $hit once I got married. ;)

Does it have a hardtop? If yes it will need a good hardtop hoist or hardtop stand.....

I drove a near new one some friend had bought back in about 2000 I think, that was about a '97 or a '98 SL500. It was gently used a lease return used by a very minor Hollywood movie producer/screen writer who traded it in to W I Simonson Mercedes Benz motors in Santa Monica.

It was a big, comfortable, heavy, very rapid boulevardier.

There is a reason they were called "Panzerwagens". They are extremely heavy and extremely solid.

They are beautifully engineered, great looking and perfect for long distance, high speed run downs up and down the Deutsche schnellstrasse; but running with the BMW M3 crowd and carving canyons, not so much.

The base engine, the 300 inline six, is sufficient, but for the extra V8 verve, the 500 has proven just about right, and the V12 gives scorching performance but can be more costly to maintain and for some it is over the top.

They are the last of the SL models with unarguable (or is it inarguable?):D build quallity - as the first models are from 1990 - and their biggest problem is can be the soft top if not used for long periods of time, the creases and such can get bad, and the roof raising and lowering mechanism, can give problems,

But with the excellent 500 motor it is a VERY balanced vehicle, that is well capable of lasting into the hundreds of thosands of miles, making the purchase of one, as here, with 100,000 miles on its clock, a car that is far closer to the beginning of its life than to the end.

For those folks among us who are unmarried and without children, and don't plan to load them with huge amounts of luggage, they can make a very viable proposition, and there absolutely is no denying their prestige, - and in some colors they can be utterly stunning, and on warm sunny days, for reliable cruising, from the Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel to the Palm Springs Tennis Club, they can't be beat.

I'd love to own one that was about a '90 or a '91 in Almandine Red with Palomino seats. Or maybe Black/black.

Having had a Mercedes Benz for a dozen years with chromed knockoff Lorinser wheels, I would prefer stock; after a time chromed wheels rust, pit and degrade, and something in the chroming process itself, the heat process, can actually weaken them,

and chromed wheels are in fact, illegal for street driving in Germany, there are reasons for this!!

The R129 roadsters are also very very safe in huge crashes.

This well known video shows one as it actually crashed and rolled, at well over 100 on the Autobahn, and as it happened, this R129 driver simply walked away afterward, and in any other convertible probably would have certainly have been killed.

Wow. there's that envy muscle, twitching again.

Dee8go 03-19-2009 03:55 PM

That was quite a wreck! I think the 129 is the best looking SL since the first ones made in the fifties.

iwrock 03-19-2009 04:55 PM

Dee, you should buy our SL600. Clean, 105k miles both tops, new tires. We have all the records from new.

Its black on black and is sex on wheels. :D

I will make you a deal on it too.
