Had some fun today testing out the new DSLR.The Canon Rebel Xsi.. I went out to the camera shop and got a camera bag and checked out a Tamron 70-300mm telephoto lens. I like the camera shop but I can get it for a lot less on B&H. But anyways... I did a little of everything as I was figuring out the controls and settings.

Please don't take this post "the wrong way" but I suspect it may be susceptible to that interpretation.

Many many years ago, I attended a lecture by portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh. One of the basic pieces of advice he doled out that evening was "Never show your discards."

Having come from that dark ages of exposing film emulsion to light and then working hours under safelights and long hours of inhaling Dektol and indicator stop bath fumes to get just a few images "right" it has somewhat spoiled my enjoyment of "snapshots" whether taken on a megapixel cell phone camera or DSLR.

I hope you take the time and learn to enjoy mastering the art of putting light on silicon and the related arts of composition, theme and visual messaging. It all starts with the eye and brain, the equipment typically just gets in the way.

yeah.. I need to work on my lighting. I did attend a short lecture on lighting which I do remember. I need to get one of those reflector things. The camera shop has a 5 in one that like folds up into a small frisbee sized circle. I was just out with a friend having some fun.


these were the better of what I had taken(well think I did).. I don't show my discards.. But I learn from them. I learned a lot in film class. Its better to do it right the first time around so I don't have to waste time developing film and doing the whole process.

you'll see me get better soon and some better shots.

I do know some of our forum members are deep into photography and can offer a lot of pointers and constructive criticism which I do look forward to.

she asked me today if I want to run a half marathon with her in a few months.. Its the Disney "Princess half marathon"

ehhh I'll do it with her but I wouldn't go to that crap alone.. well that marathon lol

aww Hilary wouldn't like to hear that lol. (my friends dog) She is old but doesn't like to be called old. Being half chow and I think retriever she can still have some energy.

So what is it now? A DSLR or a 35mm?

Without being too critical, your exposure is not too bad. Just avoid mid day, best before 9 am and after 5 pm. If you do artificial lighting with film use compensation filters or Tungsten film for incadescent.

What pokes my eye, is your framing and the way you bring in the depth of field.

The frog is the best in my opinion, the Chevy would be perfect if it was free standing, but what can we do ...?

its my new DSLR.. Its a canon rebel XSi with a standard kit lens. I like depth of field shots. My old 35mm had a nice low f stop lense..F2.8 where as the XSi's stock lens is F3.5...

The Bel Air was sitting there since its owner was selling some stuff at the golf shop and the mini van was one of the other cars sitting there so it couldnt move .. but I do have some photo shoots of some delorean's coming up and I do have to shoot the celebration car show and the jetway night party the night before for the delorean world magazine. I like doing this kind of stuff.

I wish I didn't have to work saturday nights so I could go out to Old Town in Kissimme and get some shots of the drive ins they have for the pre '70 cars.

I should get a wide angle lens as well for use as well

I know the best times for shooting outdoors are as you have said. I did notice that in my shots. But hey for just some having fun shots they are ok

Sweet. I wouldnt mind a Nikon D90, but chingow thats a lot of money. I'll just use my canon point and shoot or my sister's D50.

my bold has a pretty good camera in it with a flash.

almost bought a D90 but I'd never or rarely use the video feature

At least for me it seems like photography is one of those things where the more I learn, the more I realize that I have left to learn.

Here's a tip:
When shooting people or animals remember to ALWAYS focus on the eyes.
