my worst spill was not in the Benz ether, although the constant oil leaks creates the NEVER rust option.
I was changing the oil in my dads F350. Its an 88 with a 7.3 + the banks turbo kit. anyway, changing the oil he tells me, "you have to let it drain for a while." so I help him with yard work for a few hours and then go back to the truck. I untwist the oil filter and get is all most all the way unthreaded them all of a sudden about a gallon of oil falls on my FACE. the truck is very similar to the Mercedes with the oil cooler lines coming out of the oil filter housing, only instead of the filter being in a tower and coming out the top, it unscrews from the bottom. so the oil cooler dumped on my face! them my dad says "didn't I tell you, you gotta pop a hole in the filter, thats why I told you to let it drain for a long time" as i'm staning there with oil all over my head and face! Thanks Dad!

I like that my car leaks a bit of fluids, it keeps the underside coated in oil and in MI, thats awesome, it really does prevent rust!

My embarrassing post number 2 on this subject:
I have a Honda outboard motor on my boat. The crankcase holds 6 quarts. I knew that because I looked up in the manual how many quarts of oil I needed to buy. I put my cheapo 5 quart capacity plastic oil drain pan under the outboard and pulled the plug. (You smart folks already know where this is going.....) You can't, I repeat CAN'T, put 6 quarts of used oil in a 5 quart oil drain pan. Big stain in the street in front of the house. ![]()

![]() It actually has a separation system that vacs out both valvecovers and liquids go through the separator and back to the pan W/ a small atmosheric vent. It became overwhelmed rather fast! I know I did good when i coated most of the main street through Augusta! Other Notable messes: We used to run a 69 Nova Pro-Mod drag car! Huge alcohol burning supercharged 526ci Arias/Fontana Hemi! It runs nice thick honey like 50-60w race oil.....carries 90-100 psi oil pressure at idle! It has a 14qt dry-sump oiling system (external oil pump with tank and oil scavenged from the pan via large lines and AN fittings) Well at our 1st race last season, after instslling our fresh motor, i put all the lines on, well i thought ![]() ![]() ![]() One time my dad was posta change the oil in it, and he did drain the oil tank but forgot the oil pan! And added the full empty amount of new oil! The track workers wernt to happy cleaning out "trail" up that it burped out during the burnout ![]() I too have fallen victim to the "tranny pan fliud slosh" !!! Im thinkin oh i got this and it starts to tip and it becomes a case of me correcting my grip and overcorrecting untill I endup wearing it or the floor does! Its always the best with dirty/nasty BURNT ATF ![]() Icing on the cake is making a mess, get mad, start cleaning, and slip and fall in it AND endup injured ![]()

I cracked my oil pan on a monster speed bump/brick crosswalk unit one time, and started what I can only be thankful was a slow leak. Drove 10 or 15 miles not knowing I had trouble, and parked on the Blue Ridge Parkway (of all places to be an oil dumper, right?) to watch a meteor shower. Never, fortunately, lost oil pressure. Walked back around the car two hours later and noticed the remaining 1.5 gallons of Rotella floating out from under the car.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh man, I have done the exact same thing - trying to start a siphon of gas out of an old lawn tractor, could not find a narrow tube so like a fool I used a garden hose. Take a good pull on a garden hose to start a siphon of gasoline. ![]() ![]() Changing oil in my 400E last weekend - I have one of those closed / bottle-type drain pans. The motor was nice and hot to get the oil flowing out quickly. When I unscrewed the drain plug that SOB was HOT and I dropped it right into the pan. Wouldn't you know it is the perfect size to fit in the hole in the top of that drain pan like a stopper. ![]() *CURSES* Might be time to pick up an oil extractor... |

Two stories of the Valdez
I have two of them for you.
Florida, ~78 I was a teenager, riding a water buffalo. Time to change the fluids. I drain the transmission and radiator, refill the transmission with motor oil, then start filling the radiator. As soon as I start pouring antifreeze mix into it, it starts coming out the bottom. I'd forgotten the plug. I look underneath, and had forgotten the transmission drain plug too, but that oil takes a bit of a path to get there, so it was just then pouring out. Missouri, ~84 My father bought an old Chevy wagon. A '66, I think, for $250. It ran, drove fairly well and had new tires. After he had that car for a few months, we were motoring along (I think he was driving) and smoke started pouring out from under the hood. Shut down the motor and popped the hood, and motor oil was drooling off of absolutely everything. The underside of the hood was dripping with it, and it was evaporating off of the exhaust. No fire, thank goodness. The car had burst a radiator hose. I noticed that after much looking around; there was a small split in one of the big hoses, and the radiator had been filled with motor oil. I bet some of the old-timers can see where this goes. There is only one reason to fill the radiator with motor oil, and that is because it has a cracked block. |

Well, if you're going to post stuff like that, at least make them big enough to see clearly!
