On gunbroker it looks like I can get a nice one for $1200, so a heck of a lot cheaper than an M14.

Looks good to me, super reliable Ak47 action, big round, semi auto, and totaly badass looks.

I only have small caliber stuff, I'm feeling the need for a large caliber rifle.

Defiantly looks good and no one will confuse it for anything else. I've always liked the idea of a marksmens rifle.

Are you getting the super cool PSO-1 scope with it as well?

You must check to see if this is a true military model. The civilian ones have a shorter barrel, no bipod and a cheesy stock instead of the nice, very sturdy Russian olive.

You will also be surpised at the lack of heft which this rifle has.

The action is similar to, but not identical to, the Kalashnikov action.

The 7,62mm x 54,00mm cartridge does have some kick, but is very accurate.

Believe it or not, and this is personal opinion, the Moisin-Nagant with the 31" barrel and scope is a lot more accurate.

Probably because it's firing from the totally locked breech of a bolt action.

If you need something bigger than a 7,62mmx39,00mm the cartridge is very, very good. Ask Vasili Zaitsev, the dude from Enemy at the Gates. He polished off a lot of guys with a bolt-action Moisin.

Consider: From a looks perspective dressing up an RPK (long barrel AK47) has more of the studliness factor for some people and is cheaper. Your choice on that one.

If you want a Dragunov, to say that you have a Dragunov, you are paying for the name and a number of them are periodically available through Southern Ohio Gun etc for 750-1000. That's another reason to shop.

Way back when I bought mine for 500 and sold it later for 750. Didn't regret the very smooth Moisin bolt action that replaced it.

But one day, when I retire, I may consider sinking some money into a bigger caliber: a ten-shot Barrett light fifty will keep the neighbors away so I can work on my cars.

Its the cheapest semi auto sniper rifle I can purchase.

A PSG1 would be awsome but I could never spend $25k on a gun. A Barrett Bravo 98 is like $6k, a tricked out sniper M14 isn't much cheaper. What other semi auto sniper rifles are out their? Sako's are sweet, but bolt action and not any cheaper.

I do want a bolt action, but a K98 insted of a MN, a K98 is good to 800+ yards.

When it comes down to it, its a toy. I just want to say I have a Dragunov because I can't afford this, yet...

Id take a Dragunov! One bad lookin gun! Id also take a Romaian SSD, basicly a copy but cheaper.

I do have a Mosin Nagant. M91/30 Tula, iirc. Love it!

The Bravo is wicked too, actually any Barret but the cost really stings.

I have read that the Dragunov is one of - (if not the best) - sniper rifles out there.

I would say its probably one of the best from the former communist bloc, but our stuff is leaps and bounds better.

Its like the saying, "why do people use AK47's? Because they can't afford M16's."

Russian stuff is pretty crude, it works, but its crude.

I'd learn to shoot a standard rifle accurately before I ventured into a sniper rifle. How are your shot groups at 300-500-700 yards?

how tall are you? i've held one and being kinda short (5'6"), it felt like a stretch.

I have an idea. Join the military and if you are good enough, they will not only train you but furnish you the sniper rifle and ammo, etc, etc. When I was drafted, I was given an M16. I have to say that today, comparing a semi-auto with any other rifle I can have, I'd take a good bolt action 30-06 over an M16 any day. I can't even hunt much with the M16.

BTW anyone notice how much the Pobeda looks like an old Volvo? It's actually designed after the 1939 "Turtle Back" Ford. The Roosians stole one and made the car.

Regarding the AK vs M-16: The Russian's reliability is superior, because their tolerances are greater than in the Stoner-designed M-16/M-4. BUT that reduces accuracy. However, their design intent and philosophy are: in the hands of the typical soldier, a gun that's jammed is worth less than a gun that isn't jammed, but slightly less accurate.

The flip side of that is that the Dragunov SVD rarely jams. But then it doesn't fire full auto either. But wait... the M-16 jams at semi-auto ...oops

Friend of mine in the russian army said they held a demo for his unit. The AK-47 vs the M16. M16 fired decently but way more accurate than the AK. Drag them for a mile in the muck an the AK fired the M16 didn't.

Interviews with now Engineer Major General Kalashnikov (retired) report that reliability above all was his design intent.
