Great video!

I had to abort a takeoff in a Varga Kachina one time when a grabby brake on one side disguised itself as torque effect and then reared it's ugly head just as I rotated and the nose wheel left the ground. It's always kind of weird at that moment of decision when you have to figure out whether to go/no go.

"I learned about flying from that" is a great column. I read every one.

The brakes are on fire. I saw on a show once that EACH brake on a big jet can absorb enough energy to bring like 70 family sedans to a quick stop. So thats times like 10 wheels on the real big jets. That's some stopping power!

Wow he got lucky, and made the right decision in 1/10th of a second to abort.

Hmmm...I think he was trying to take off downwind. Look at the end, when he ran into the dirt, the dust followed along with him instead of blowing away to the left.

They make those carbon-fibre brakes in a plant near me. They cook those brakes for awhile at way high temps. Every now and then I check out the job opportunities there. Only thing I don't like is they had a rotating schedule. Not a healthy idea , I think.

The brakes on a Boeing 757 can generate 85,000 HP of braking power.

Standard engineering equipemnt and recovery equipment can do that even in sand. Not easy, and expensive, but certainly not impossible.

They may even build a temporary runway to do it, like for tank recovery.
