Vista is actually a very good and solid OS, I've been using it (Ultimate 32-bit) basically since it came out. On all our family PCs (3 of them).

I would run Windows Update if you haven't and install all recommended updates. Keep running the service until there is nothing left to update. Keep you printer plugged in and powered up while doing so.

After all that, reboot with printer unplugged. Then after you have logged in, plug in printer and power up. See what happens then.

Reason being is that you may be lacking some critical updates and/or drivers.
Agree completely. I understand there are some Enterprise issues, but that is hardly a concern for most home users.

I just did about 2 minutes of research on the issue and the general consensus is that your printer is too old (10 years?), and Vista does not/will not recognize it. Buy a new printer. You can pick up a respectable but basic ink jet for under $50. As you can see from this list, Lexmark fails to list your model as "Vista-compatible": http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/sequentialem/home/0,6959,204816596_924205346_924205387_en,00.html. Blame Lexmark, not Vista. They no longer support the product.

I think you've nailed it Ron. I was hoping that he may have been a Service Pack behind, or that subsequent updates may have found a driver, but 10 years in tech timelines is a lifetime.

I just updated to Vista SP2 today.

Good news is, like you've stated, printers are cheap right now. You can get an all-in-one scanner/printer/fax/photocopier for about $100, or less. Basic printer even cheaper.

Yeah, just checked. Apparently it cleans up the shadow volume copy (svchost.exe)...nice!

Some new printers are so cheap, it's easier to buy an entire new printer than just replacement cartridges...crazy.

Here's an all-in-one for $34.99 (free shipping): Canon PIXMA MP470, It's listed for $39.99. Coupon code "EMCLTNP66" lowers it to $34.99. This deal may be today-only, I'm not sure.

Can't beat that with a stick.
