Survived our first tornado.

Had an F1 ("weakest" tornado) touch down in our town Friday about 4:45. I can't believe the hail didn't break the windows or windshields. Crazy stuff! We don't get them up this way, I can't imagine what it must be like living in tornado alley and "strong" tornadoes. Amazingly no one was killed or injured.

A friend and daughter were driving home from a summer soccer practice when she couldn't see anymore so she pulled over. A tree fell on their van between the front seats and second row, lowering the roof by about 2'. 6" more either way and it would have been ugly. Nothing more than a few scratches.

We were very lucky, didn't have any real damage. I did have an 80' pine punch a few holes in my neighbor's garage and another one clip another neighbor's shed. It just took 150+ yo trees and either pushed them over or clipped the tops right off. Obviously there are more important things, but it's tough seeing those lost. We got power back about 3pm yesterday and the town is about 95% restored right now.

The house across the street, tree managed to miss two houses but tore the new electrical services and the siding that they were attached to completely off the house.

Down the street, blown over through garage.

My boss' old house, amazingly no broken windows just ripped the porch off.

Few streets over.

This house is two streets over. It really was sickening to see (I couldn't get myself to take a pic so I sent my kids back). The lady was closing the window to the left of the trunk when she heard a 'crack' and ran.

While an F1 may be weakest in terms of wind speed, it's still...a TORNADO!

Hope your area had no fatalaties and few (if any injuries). Yeah, it's particularly disheartening the way trees that lasted for generations are suddenly uprooted effortlessly by tornados.

Weather has been weird in the US this year...patterns that have erupted during seasons or locales that typically don't experience this type of activity...

House on the town green. There were dozens of trees like this. You can see the size of the root mass by the guy standing on the trunk.

Crappy phone pic also on the green, firetruck gives a sense of scale.

Nothing special, just a funky pic. Snapped it like a twig.

After about the 10th trip to the curb, my wife had the bright idea to get a work van to bring the brush out. It took 5 loads filled to the roof. I've got some more down in the far back but I'll get to that later and just chuck it into the woods.

Along those lines I got the idea to get our Piggyback from work and brought the pieces of trunk out. I cut it into 3-4' sections and rolled them up onto a pallet, 4-5 at a time. That was about 6 trips.

I don't like the term lazy, I prefer resourceful.

1/2 of my pile.

Our neighbor's to the south, Rocky Hill, to the rescue!

My brother and I went for a drive through the area to survey the aftermath. It was tough getting around, a lot of the roads where closed to filled with clean-up crews and where we were didn't even look like it was the worst area hit. I did make note of one house on Ridge Road that still had a tree leaning against it that no one was working on......

The Fujita Scale rates a tornado by examining the damage caused by the tornado after it has passed over a man-made structure, not wind speed. Fujita himself believed it to be a flawed system of measurement but was easily implemented and therefore, useful.

Looks like an oak tree, hard/heavy wood!

Those are some crazy pictures! On the bright side, it will boost the local construction economy!

The most important thing is that you all survived it.

tornados are crazy strong

About 20 years ago a strong line of tornados went through Eastern NC. I drove from Raleigh back to Wilmington the next day. I crosses the path of the tornado several times. In 100 yards distance, houses were perfectly fine, then roofs blown off, then a whole house gone, and a full size Chevy van wrapped around the top of tree, then 100 yards down the road all is fine.

Glad you and yours are ok. Stuff can be fixed or replaced.

Do you guys have Tornado Sirens? That would be so creepy hearing them go off...

I hear so many people here in California always say how they're so glad they don't live in Tornado States, and stuff, but we have earthquakes which can suck just as bad, although the tiny ones are cool lol

Glad to hear everyone was okay though!

When my dad was little they had a Tornado in his village in Germany.....some trees were blown down, and a few people lost a couple tiles from their roof. That's it. Concrete houses, tile roofs, steel integrated shutters over the windows, all utilities underground. The power did not even go out. The house his parents built had poured concrete walls and floors with rebar, over a foot thick.

Those Germans know how to build!

Sounds like a U-boat bunker.
