All my dogs have been rescues to date. They've always had issues at first, but I've been able to work through most of them with love and kindness - something they may have received very little of from their previous owners.

I do agree that trying to re-home the animal is a lot nicer than just dumping it. I've seen so many cats and dogs dumped on the backroads to die or become feral animals. Either way, they don't face a good fate at all. My cat was a dumpee, at least I'm almost sure. Showed up at my parents house, in a remote area, at 6 months old, and was so friendly it was obvious he wasn't a wild kitten. He was starving and covered in ticks ... but the sweetest cat I've ever known. My parents area is a popular pet-dump place. We've found a handful of really sweet dogs, usually sitting by the road patiently waiting for their owner to come back. It's inexcusable.

I wouldn't be entirely critical of everyone who leaves an animal at a shelter, though. There are some local shelters and programs that can help re-home your pet if you're really hit hard. They do their best not to put down animals and several are "no-kill." That is a FAR better option than dumping the animal somewhere or sending it to a questionable home because you're desperate.

Personally, I'd live under a bridge with my cat if it came down to it.
Well that is an interesting issue. When I worked at a shelter we always tried to get people to rehome their own animals because we were low-kill and always full. This "DIY rehoming fee" did not exist then AFAIK, this was in 2001-2002. I have seen ads for pure breeds with 200-300-400 "rehoming" fees. These are just breeders/mills. As for no-kill, it is technically impossible. I saw heroic and expensive things done to save animals. But you cannot save 100%.

The "no-kill" usually just refers to healthy, adoptable animals. Very sick or aggressive animals are still euthanized, but they hold onto -- or put in foster homes -- healthy, adoptable animals instead of putting them down. The downside of it is they fill up, and have to stop accepting animals. It's kind of a no-win situation ... I'd have a really hard time working at a shelter, even though they help animals ... it would just overwhelm me after a while.

We called that low-kill. You get used to it. It was a bit like "ER" some times, people crying, yelling, people telling lies, cops coming and going.
