Any recommendations for eyeglass scratch removal?

One of my youngest two decided, apparently, to use my glasses to clean the floor or some otherwise unsmooth surface. One side isn't too bad, the other has some scratches right in the line of sight that don't seem to be too deep. Obviously I won't get them completely out but I was hoping to get rid of the light hazing effect caused by most of the lighter scratches.

The real answer is to get new glasses made, and that is the plan. But my prescription is 1.5 yrs. old so they don't have it on file and Lenscrafters won't fill it. I've go travelling tomorrow and Wednesday so it'll be the end of the week before I can schedule and appt.

I tested a corner with 2000 grit wet sand paper and it's way too abrasive (out of the line of sight, though).

Any emergency ideas?

Toothpaste - not the tarter removal type, just the regular stuff. Test it on the little area that you used the 2000 on and see if it clears it up before going right across the front.

I'll give it a shot! I've got my prescription sunglasses but I'm not cool enough to wear them indoors or at night.

I just use my fingers and rub it in. We use it here at work to clean up scratched TV screens.

I've used basic toothpaste to polish my glass lenses before. I had a coating start to flake a lot, and I took it all the way off (very slowly) with just my fingers and toothpaste. To this day (couple of years), not a problem with the clarity.

Would that work also for old Ray-ban sun glasses?

Plastic or Glass Lenses?

Plastic...look at trying the "Meguires Plastic Polish"...the stuff you use on those yellowed/crazed plastic headlight covers...and a small buffing wheel on a Dremel tool...VERY LIGHTLY...

Otherwise...if it's glass, head over to the optometrist that did your set for you in the first place...they should have the gear in the back to "buff" that right out...

Mine were scratched a few years back and they took my glass glasses and had me back on the road in 15 minutes...no appointments or anything...and since I got the prescription filled there, N/C for the time.

I dropped off a box of Krispy Kremes the next time I came through - I still get a smile from them when they see me in the lobby...

Dee is always there to help. Hell even the 2000 wet is waaay too coarse.

Thanks for the suggestions all! I'll give them a shot tonight. Off to VT for a trade show with my northern New England golf/sports guy tomorrow. Nice day for a ride in the Green Mountains!
