Back in the days of free living and sinful habits, I quit caffeine and nicotene on the same day. My head felt like it was in a hydraulic vice for two days. But I got through it ok without killing my wife or kids.

At the time I was being tested for what I thought was an ulcer. Six weeks later I had five coronary artery bypasses.
Went back to caffeine about 2 years later. Never smoked again.

TIA.
I gave it up cold turkey, but just during the week. It was getting to be an expensive proposition for me at 2-3 cups a day (and we're talking 16-22oz cups hot) bought from various places because I was too lazy to brew my own. I figured that couldn't be too healthy for me either.

The first week sucked, headaches and just feeling logy (?) but by the second week I felt much better. I still enjoy it on the weekends, I could probably curtail it all together if I wanted to but was mainly just looking to cut down the quantity. And now, if I need a pick-me up or need to stay up a little later having a cup of coffee actually works. Before I could have a cup at 7 or 8 at night and still fall right asleep!

If you use it for a pick-me-up in the mornings, try to go to bed earlier on a regular basis. Some people that use coffee (or other caffenine) in the morning as a pic-me-up are sleep deprived. My wife used to drink it every morning before we met. She would stay up late. I went to bed earliesh. She started going to bed earlier and no longer drinks coffee. Only occasionally on a weekend.

I've never liked coffee. Can't stand the smell. But then I'm kind of odd that way because most people love the smell.

Not easy but possible...

I've been on few strict diets over the last few years and each time I had to give up coffee (and the sugar/cream that come with it). It wasn't that hard - it was harder for me to deprive myself of the foods I like. Each time I've had a tough headache morning 'till night.

I never planned giving up coffee completely though - I like to start each morning with a fresh strong brew. These days I usually keep it to 1 - 1 and 1/2 cups and almost never in the evenings.

Good luck -
James

Occasionally I'll buy myself a cup which at the most is once a week. Couple odd facts related to me and coffee.

1. Used to work at Dunkin Donuts but have never had a drop of their coffee.
2. I've delivered more iced coffee to SwampYankee then I've actually consumed myself.

Nothing like a Diet Coke in the morning! Or throughout the day! Or at 11pm! I've given up caffeine for weeks at a time, it's not headaches for me but a really "I'm really jonesing a Dr Pepper right now!" feeling.

I figure I'm not as bad using Caffeine at school as the guys that take ADD meds so they can turn into a studying zombie.

I'm guessing that would be true after the first one?

Large iced from DD or Tank iced from Tim Horton's with milk and two sugars. I'd go through 2-3 every day once the temps got over about 50*.

Coffee is awesome, I'll never give it up. Though, I usually only drink 1 cup a day or less, so I'm not really "Addicted". Moderation is the key. I try to stay with one caffeinated beverage per day or less. As for pop.....usually 1 can or less per day. Sometimes I'll go days or even weeks and not drink any at all. Its random.

Well i've brought you two so you can do the math

I've seen worse. I remember one guy who used to come in twice a day with a giant 'mug' and buy the entire pot of Cafe blend. I would brew him a fresh one every time. (It was actually a giant green cup that Dunkin sold for a time...I'll try to find a picture of it)

I'm down to one cup a day, too.

I hear tea is better for you.

Related to cmac's link, the cortisol issue. I want to see what it's like chemical free (as in mood altering substances). What's my baseline stress level? General temperment? Issues like that.
