If you need a manual transmission setup or you intend to mount to an existing transmission setup then I'd definitely look more deeply into the replacement's engine's capabilities - may be the manufacturer has some data sheets on the internet?
Is it worthwhile thinking about changing part of the transmission as well as the engine - or is that going too far? I guess the more modular you can keep the swap the better - I wouldn't be looking into replacement flywheels and custom made camshafts (to change the usable rev range) I think that will get pretty pricey pretty quickly and you may be able to get a similar benefit in a different way.

It's always worthwhile thinking about it, especially since doing an engine transplant to my '57 DKW is way down near the bottom of my long to-do list. The diesel Kubota belongs to a friend anyway, and she is very happy with it. So I don't think she will be donating her engine to my project anytime soon!
Happy Motoring, Mark
