The interview I mentioned cited several cases where this type of information did come up in searches by companies vetting potential employees. The employees did not always or actually, they seldom knew WHY tey were turned down for the jobs. Some of the cases mentioned had to do with arrest records in which the person was aquitted of the crime and their arrest record had been expunged.

I guess the new saying should be "Innocent until proven guilty OR until Googled."

I recently saw a show on MSNBC about information on the internet. AOL has a task force that monitors e-mails, internet searches, etc. for criminal activity, which they then turn over to police. Google saves your searches and e-mail forever. Yahoo deletes it after a few months.

Privacy is a notion of the past. I know a guy who got a DUI with a suspended license. His mugshot is the first thing that pops up when you google his name. Bye bye jobs. It's almost like double jeopardy. You do the crime, you do more than the time.

In WI, when you get charged in court, your name goes into a database and it is searchable. From what I hear, it is because once you are in court, that is public knowledge. For instance, as a bank, I cannot say I lent money to you. OTOH, I can say that I took you to court since it becomes public record. In this case, DUI is a public record.

Now if you want to take a chance with this guy and let him drive truck for you, fair enough.

You guys are thinking a bit too much into this.

Facebook is semi private. By that I mean to view a profile and its pictures you must be a "friend" with that person or be in their network.

By default anyone who is in a specific network can view other people's profile.

The first thing anyone should do with their new facebook account is to go to the privacy settings page. In there you can change that setting amongst others so random people in your network can't see you.

Also there is an option to disable google's indexing so you won't be included in google searches. Granted I have no idea how google retains its data, so at the worst the only thing people will see in a google cache is your name, profile picture, and some friends.

Myspace was the major troublemaker for privacy concerns. ANYONE could view those profiles until they were locked down by the profile owner. I honestly don't know anyone who uses myspace anymore.

If you all are that worried about what an employer can see and know about you, go ahead and google your name. The things for me that pop up are my youtube channel (with TV I produced way back in high school), my facebook, some old articles I submitted for tech sites, and some Bugzilla postings.

A potential employer won't be able to see your facebook profile unless the HR wheenie is part of your network, then you should configure your account to not viewable unless they add you as a friend.

And finally don't add your boss as a friend on facebook unless you guys really are friends. My boss and I are both MB nerds so we're obviously friends. And I also don't engage in illegal activies where pictures are taken.

When you remove the information from facebook, FB may still have but nothing short of a court order will have it be recovered.

An HR wheenie isn't going to dig for hours on end to find dirt on you guys.

So what would he answer when asked: Have you been convicted of any offense besides traffic tickets? I think DUI would be out of that category. But lets take Google out of the picture. Do you think that as an employer I will be so stupid to take your good word for it? Think again. I will be checking up CCAP when I get your application. We used to do that to screen customers when I worked in the payday loan industry. Why? Because I want to see if other loan companies have sued you. What happens when I see that there? If Google will make a difference, CCAP will make an even bigger difference since there is more info on CCAP than Google about your legal exploits.

So yes, Google, not withstanding, it can still come back to haunt you. If you want to argue that it is unfair, feel free. Tell Madoff's kids that people should not hold it against them that their father was involved in something naughty. I'm sure it would be nice to say that when your penalty to the court system is paid, everything is expunged but that is not going to be the case. It will dog you.
