Modern student excuses

You knew it had to happen. A colleague of mine stopped in my office to tell me that he had just gotten an e-mail from a student. She couldn't turn in her work because the dog had eaten her USB drive. I told him he should give the student a two day extension since it should take about that long for her to retrieve it.

I had a file corrupt on me which sent me in a panic until I realized I emailed it to someone a few days ago. I lucked out there.

This is my fifth and final year of college. It seems like the bar is getting set lower and lower every year. When I started, it was a short hop. Now it seems like they're putting the bar on the ground hoping you don't trip over it. A few teachers have obviously been handing out A's and B's to keep students coming, as they live in fear of the budget cuts killing off their department due to poor reviews or enrollment rates.

It has benefited* me in that I've been able to coast through putting in minimal effort. *I'm not sure benefit is the best word, but that's all I can think of right now.

What are your thoughts on the proposal of a 3 year undergraduate program as a means of budget cuts, thus cutting out some of the "fluff" classes that most students have less than 10% retention?

Yep, our librarian, a very savvy tech guy always tells students to keep an e-mail account just for schoolwork. E-mail versions of work to the account frequently so you always have a copy of your work available from anywhere. He also tells students to send all bibliographical info to an e-mail account set up just for it.

Don't think cutting out a year of education would get very far. I suggested that we increase student tuition by x% and then upon graduation refund that amount to the student in a cash payment in order to encourage graduation.

I had a pleasant conversation about students cheating in the disabilities office.

The ladies there were just flabbergasted about the prospect of students cheating in their test taking rooms and wanted help from me to curb it. The computers in their rooms were all networked so I simply said remove the Ethernet cable.

Well what if they bring in flash drives and CDs?

Then periodically walk past the window. Not too hard. Cheating is an arms race and always will be, but checking up randomly on kids tends to discourage that.

Perhaps so that you can become a useful citizen of the polity, rather than just a highly trained ape.

So you can figure out from the Latin root why different shapes of pastas are named as such and which of these names are made up.

I've been an engineer for about 30 years now and I have had to write many thousands of pages in proper English. I also have to deal with and speak to some well educated people on a regular basis. At some point in your career, you will leave your dilbert cubical and be using your "liberal education" more than your technical education. Just sayin'

Is college for education, or is it glorified job training?
Are you, as an individual, worth something simply because you are an individual, or is your worth completely described by the wealth you will ( hope to) earn?

I think that viewing college simply as job training seriously devalues education.

I have a friend whose memory of history is amazing. He can recall almost anything from the dynasties of Egypt, to the Kings of France to English history from the early 4th Century, or so. He is a music teacher, so this has no benefit on his job performance.

Performing music is performing history. Playing an Elizabethan Galliard is reenacting history itself.

The only LAS college requirement that left a very bad taste in my mouth was the required 20 hours of foreign language. When I hear someone speaking Spanish now I cringe with anxiety because of the year of hell I went through. All the teachers were grad students, with English being their second language. My other classes suffered because of all the effort I was putting in. I was required to take more foreign language classes than English classes, which confused me since the writing quality of most college students nowadays is awful.

Latin has been much more enjoyable. I love the old stories.
