Coffee Pot Question

Lately my 1997 Proctor Silex 12 cup has been getting a lot of grounds into the coffee. I'm not overfilling the grounds, and I'm using the same filters from before the problem started. From looking at the used filter and grounds it looks like water is being fired into the coffee grounds with excessive velocity causing it to overrun the filter. Ideas?

Your heater coil is drawing too many amps. It is time to break down and buy a new pot or perhaps a new heating element if one is still available.

I am not familiar with the Proctor Silex model, but have you ever run some vinegar through it to clean out the sediment. There could be a build up of sediment that reduces the outlet which increases pressure at the outlet. So you may now have more of a blast of water on the grounds instead of a trickle.

I cleaned it with vinegar once a couple years ago. I suppose I could try that again and see what happens before I spring for a new one.

De-lime it. I bet it's spitting hot water due to pressure build up as suggested above. On the other hand, 17 years is a pretty good run for a 40 dollar appliance.

We quit coffee makers for now. Using melitta type filter holders and making one cup at a time. I think it has helped cut down on consumption.

I boil the water on the stove and pour it in the cup to heat the cup. Then pour the water back in the pot and bring it to nearly a boil to make coffee.

I still have the big bunn coffee maker on the shelf and another one new in a box. At some point I am sure we will use coffee makers again.

I also pulled the filter basket out of our last coffee maker and can use it to make coffee too, works just like a melitta.

Boiling water? Next I suppose you'll be telling me you use ground coffee from a 3lb can.

Would white vinegar de-lime its innards, or do I need something else?

A pot full of white vinegar. The run 3-4 more pots full of fresh water through it to rinse.

Hmm, 1997 wasn't a particularly good year for that model. It had head gasket problems..

MY GOD BUY A NEW ONE!
