The only caveat to this treatment is that the cost of the water and vinegar is greater than the current value of the coffeemaker. The age of the coffeemaker alone provides substantial grounds for replacement.

Perfect place for the original post. It is here on open discussion, in a forum where there are plenty of posters that can afford to junk their thirty plus year old vehicle but choose to keep them going even if it means getting dirty quite often. How does a thread about some foreign leader speaking in front of our Congress belong if this does not? I hope Skippy gets it brewing just fine, and gets another seventeen years out of it.

It looks like I'll have to compare prices between a good sized bottle of white vinegar against the cost of a new coffee pot. I thought I had some white vinegar hanging around, but it turns out I don't.

I've had coffee from a french press before, and it wasn't bad. I've also had coffee made by the "cupping" procedure you may have seen in documentaries about companies that make premium coffees. I would call it a variation on cowboy coffee, and it also wasn't bad, but I'm more the type to brew a pot, have a couple cups from it, and reheat the rest in the microwave until it's gone. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'm glad you posted about cowboy coffee, thought I was going to have to do it. I will leave the subject of cowboy coffee to the reader's initiative.

I just use the boiling water to preheat the coffee cup. I don't boil the actual coffee brewing water but I am not sure why. My own initiative has not been sufficient to supply that answer.

Cowboy coffee is probably just as well boiled, who cares? Unless you are a cowboy from some broken mountain somewhere.

My sister in law gave us a Keurig single cup machine a couple of years ago for Christmas. Being too cheap to pay 50-75 cents each for a K Cup pod I just use it to heat the water for my instant coffee.

Wut?

My post was in response to a comment that "snobbery" was afoot. If it is snobbery to utilize known simple techniques and processes to make a better beverage, worthy of consumption and expense, then I am guilty.

Those satisfied with pre-ground coffee of indeterminate age and quality that is steeped in overheated water, I meant you no disrespect.

I actually use a clever cup. It makes a fresh cup each time without too much fuss.
