I'm getting calls that start off like that on both my cell phone, and my land line.

I don't know what comes next--I always immediately hang up.


Does ANYONE listen to hear what is the "important message"? My land line is registered on the Do Not Call List. ( Hmmm, Do Not Call = DNC, democrat national committee. probably no connection, but still.....)
Anyway, why am I getting these calls? Is this a valued sales tactic? Anger the prospect and he will buy.

I don't even wait for the "Please hold" part.

If it's a computer, there is a very slight delay after you say "Hello". In that interval, the phone is immediately slammed down on the cradle.

I'm really tired of the incessant telemarketing..........and it's all illegal.

I only hang up if I am extremely short of time. I got a lot of those calls from Rachael at Dish Network and many others. When time permitted, I would listen to their pitch and go along with it till I got to the point of committing. At that point I would tell them "You wasted my time, I waste yours.". If I was short of time, I would simply ask a few obscene questions. If the voice was female, I'd ask her how tight she thought she was "down there" for instance. If it was male, I ask him if he swallows or if he takes it where the sun doesn't shine, so to speak.

I know of two effective methods of cutting down on those calls.

Before I start you should know that, if you don't answer, they will keep calling - forever.

The first method, Answer the call, sound interested, but state that you don't have pencil and paper to write anything down with. Tell the caller you must get to the other phone. Put the phone down and in about 1 or 2 minutes pick up another phone. Continue like you are interested, but you can't hear what they are saying because the other phone is off the hook. Tell them to hold on while you hang the other phone up. wait 1-2 minutes and pick up the first the phone, and ask you still there, "oh good, I'm going to hank this phone up and go to the other phone where there's paper and pen." Wait 1-2 minutes and when you get to the other phone, tell them you're not interested, and want to be on their do not call list.

you can burn up to 10 minutes of their time with this method.

The second method, which I use on collection agencies that call (for someone else - not me) my business, I tell them that this is a business line, I have your phone number from caller ID, now I need an address to send a bill to. I charge $50 for each received call. Who am I speaking with, what is your company name? Usually they will laugh, and give the information that you need. Then you must also say that any future calls will be charged $50 and this rate transfers to any other collection agency that buys the note that you're trying to collect on.

I never pick up a phone if I don't know the name or number, they can leave a message if it's a legitimate call. I normally don't answer my home phone at all, everyone I need to talk to knows to call my cell.

I get nailed with it from time to time. I have to pick my cell up for every call because a lot of people call it, and usualy its numbers I don't recognize.

The Ford dealer I bought the SDL from was calling me like that for 3 years about service.

As do I. I even have it worse because I get about 10-20 calls per month asking if this is the local casino. My mobile is a lot of repetitive numbers and the casino is one number off. I just got one this morning from a number in Iowa. I don't know many people in IA that would be calling me. So I let it go to voicemail. No message. I can only assume they wanted to know something about the casin.

I'll wait to get a person to start, then ask who they'd like to talk to, set the receiver down and go about my business. That way whomever has to pay for the connection, I check back every now and again.
