As for how it's handled by the university, they probably deal only with what classes you take there. It's a "tuition statement" from your university...if you're not paying for the courseload to maintain full time status there, I don't see why it should say "full time" on their tuition statement. Call the university's bursar and see what they say...

It doesn't really matter. If you are full time then you are full time. One form will have the box checked and one won't. On the IRS form where it asks if you were a full time student you check YES. End of story.

You should have your parents try it both ways, overall it might come out better.

Can't.
"Dependent's Own Exemption A person who can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's return cannot claim his or her own exemption. This is true even if the other taxpayer does not actually claim the exemption. Example. James and Barbara can claim their child, Ben, as a dependent on their return. Ben is a college student who works during the summer and must file a tax return. Ben cannot claim his own exemption on his return. This is true even if James and Barbara do not claim him as a dependent on their return. " http://www.irs.gov/publications/p929/ar02.html#en_US_publink1000203737 I don't write the music. I just sing the song. |

Get used to it Joe. You have oh, statistically, about another 60 years to deal with "the crap"!. But heck, look on the bright side. At least you don't have a state income tax to worry about! |

Same church, but different pew. But, yes, the qualifying "support test" may be subject to "further review". Not saying the Don lives at home scott free, (as most kids do) but the meals and lodging "tab" the parents "pay" might be hard to beat. Likely it depends on how much the tuition is and who pays. ( But now that he's gassing up the Cabriolet and driving it all over FLA, he may be ok. ) Whoever provides >50% of the dependent's support, of course, gets the $3,650 brass ring, assuming the other tests are also met (age, filing status, etc.) |
