Kind of a contreversial figure. No matter how one feels about his stance on the Iraq War, he bravely served his country as a Marine.

Yes, but his passing will in the end be good news for the Democrats, the guy is an old-style pol whose time came and went.

I met him on more than one occasion and he was a stand up guy. You have to respect a guy who volunteers for military service during war. I have some fear now as to what is going to happen to our area. The very building I am working in was due in part to his dilligence.

However unpopular, just like when Kennedy (D) died while in office, in Massachusetts. Looks like another gift for an (R) seat, to me. Change is almost a certainty in light of how the populous is voting this year.

Where's he from?

Mid term elections.....in Mass the R's were supermotivated and got their base out. Dem's likely felt it was a shoe in and so didn't bother to go vote.

We'll see how this one plays out.

Pennsylvania - since 1974 if what I heard on the radio was correct - it's unbelievable how long some of them have been in office.

Murtha represented a conservative constituency. Go figure.

He went to high school in Mt. Pleasant, PA. He represents the 12th district which is pretty much all of SW PA. Just last week he was just honored as the longest serving PA Congressman in history.

Pennsylvania is sort of a mixed bag politically, right? So his seat could go R., perhaps if the Dems don't pay keen attention to securing it.

It could easily go R. Other than the Philadelphia/Pittsburgh areas, Pa is quite conservative and Republican.
