I left my shoes in my Holiday Inn Express....
in Chicago on our way to Panama over the christmas holiday and have been trying to get them back or get compensated.
Having been a long time Holiday Inn user I expected no problem. They say if I leave something in my room its not their problem. I say your maid finds my shoes and you know I spent the night there how is it that you don't contact me and say you have my shoes. They say its not their problem. Anybody have any good thoughts here? Is this how all hotels work?

that's a tough one. we are all forgetful sometimes......ask the Hotel to check their lost and found box. this is where a hotel normally keeps items that are found in the rooms after a guest checks out.
I'd bet dime to dollars that Holiday Inn has a "guest policy" visibly posted somewhere (Internet, in the room, at check in, etc.) that outlines their responsibilities and your responsibilities. you may want to review the "guest policy" before pressing further....... I ALWAYS perform a sweep of the room BEFORE I check out. I remove all the sheets and bed spreads, check the bathroom, check UNDER the bed and check all drawers in the room. I do it TWICE for my own peace of mind. |

Unless they're new and relatively expensive shoes, I would just walk away from this matter.

Sorry about your loss.
Yes. Every major hotel has a posted sign regarding what they are not responsible for. You leaving something behind is usually on the list. And understandably so. From your point of view, you see nothing wrong with: You forget your shoes. Maid finds shoes. Maid gives shoes to management. Management looks up last occupant and contacts you about your shoes. That easy. What can also happen: You leave your shoes. Maid does or doesn’t find shoes. (Keep in mind that she’s in a race to prep the room for the next guest asap, not look for stuff you left under the bed.) She does or doesn’t give them to management. Shoes don’t get discovered until next guest check in (or ???). Now we have no idea how long the shoes have been there. Did you put your name in your shoes? How can they know for sure... So now it’s a matter of you describing the shoes. No problem if the maid gave them to management as apposed to; “No sir, I didn’t find any shoes in that room (that my husband is now wearing).” So at this point the hotel simply makes a policy stating that you are responsible for your own stuff. Otherwise, if they have to be responsible for it. What’s to keep anyone from calling them up and saying: “My wife left her ring in the bathroom, and you own me the ring or $5,000”. ?? Lesson learned here is to do the “sweep” like HuskyMan, this family, along with many others do.

I once cursed the Lord because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet.
So I asked him if he had a spare pair of shoes.

Unfortunately, you will never see those shoes again if the hotel claims no responsibility. Most "budget" hotels are not concerned with such issues.
Reminds me of the time when I spent a week at the Fairmont in San Francisco. A Fed Ex box was was on my doorstep when I returned home. I left behind a toothbrush and toothpaste. The items were carefully wrapped with a handwritten note from the maid.

And, the next time you travel to SF, you’ll remember that. It’s all about PR for the higher end chains.
You’re right, sad to say - a Holiday Inn Express could care less.

Additionally, I replied to the maid in writing and contacted management to see to it her effort was recognized.

I recall reading long ago that some high end hotels didn't return personal items, particularly clothing, since some of their guests didn't want their spouses to know where and with whom, they were. Perhaps Holiday Inn is trying to go upscale.

My left shoe has a one inch lift in the sole since I got a longer right leg along with my new hip.
I did leave a grauity for the maid. I always do. Now I regret that ![]() They weren't new but replacement will be at least 200 including the cost of lifting the leftee. So you all pretty much agree....toughee luckee.... And here I thought a Holiday in Express was a little upscale..... ![]()

In 2008 I experienced a rash of forgetfullness. I left a pair of boots in the transient quarters at NAS Fallon, and then about a month later I left a pair of sneakers at the Econo Lodge in Tacoma. I never saw either again.

be somewhat forgetful of small details so that is why I took to double checking the hotel room before checking out. as we age, we sometimes need more auto reminders/check lists, etc to keep us on our toes. |
