Their appeal is to a similar demographic. There are lots of Pentecostals associated with Palin and the Tea Party. Swaggart is able to speak more straightforwardly to the same demographic since he's not a candidate for national office. They're serious but they come from a longstanding anti-intellectual tradition in the US. Their lives are based around literalist interpretations of Biblical texts, particularly the eschatological sections. They see the war in Iraq in biblical terms as a conflict between God and the devil with Islam being a religion of the devil.
