AMG Pentas for the SL

This is how the SL has looked since 2004. The wheels are from my a 2004 CLK 500 which my dad purchased new and upgraded the wheels to a split spoke style. He sold the car 2 years later with only 2000 miles on it.

I've been thinking for years now its time to make the SL period correct. When I came across these on craigslist sitting on a wrecked 300SD, with the guy wanting to sell the whole car for $500. I convinced him to just sell me the wheels, and he threw a euro headlight and an original vintage AMG badge with the purchase.

The spokes were finished in the butter color of the car, and were in ratty but straight condition.

Here is the badge, which I'm using as office decoration until someone wants to buy it.

I sent the wheels off to the refinisher after test fitting them, and they came out rather nicely. I cannot drive the SL despite the wonderful weather right now, because its in poor alignment after the front suspension rebuild. I was waiting for the wheels, which I got today.

Wow! Powder coated and freshly machined lip really made these pop!

On Monday new Bridgestones get mounted to the wheels, then an alignment and I can finally enjoy my most prized possession again.

Those look stunning. Polished lips really seal the deal. Drooling!

Finally, something about the SL. I see you mostly talk about buying a new car here or there or looking at one, but not much about your SL.

Now that you mentioned it, it will definitely give it that much desired period correct look.

What Bridgestones are you getting? When I got new wheels for the 190E I went for the Potenza Pole Position RE960. Very happy with them (and the Michelins on the 300D).

Congrats! I know it will look great!

How much did the powder coating coast? The last time I got my wheels redone they were simply painted and it's starting to peel in a few places....

I've got a set of 15" pentas on my 84 280SL.
Polished rim, black spokes with chrome center cap.

They look great, give the car the period correct look.

Only problem is they look even better on my 71 black 250C.....

Pentas on a small bumper W107 are hard to beat.

Jim

Here in the islands, it ran about $75 per wheel to have a set of Pentas media blasted and powdercoated. I went with the powder since it covered all the minor rim rash and it's fairly easy to clean up.

Much better than the CLK wheels, I think I paid about $100 each last time I had wheels powdercoated.

Shoot now I feel ripped off.....I think I paid close to $400 for my wheels to be just stripped and painted.

Will it damage my wheels to get them redone a 2nd time? (Powder coated)

The wheels were cheap, but the refinishing was expensive. I imagine if I sold these wheels as they are now I could make quite a bit of money though.

I think the SL would look cool with monoblock wheels like your wagon has. The finish on the Pentas is beautiful, but the spoke pattern....not sure. Personally I think 15" bundts freshly refinished would look awesome. But I am a bundt man.
