ridiculous mileage on newer cars.

I can't fathom how someone could put 80k miles on a 2008 C300 in such a short amount of time or let alone any vehicle that isn't even 5 years old yet.

I put 40k on my past SDL last year. I would probably be hitting 55k right now if I still had and and at the end of the year pretty damn close to 85k

My father had I think a 67k mile 10 month old F150 on his lot. I know it was out of warranty and he had the in service date from ford so it was over 50k miles and under a year old.

that's crazy. how'd you put that much on the SDL so quickly? I think the only reason I would be able to come up with is having to drive 100 miles to work everyday or being a traveling salesman

Gads, that's lot of mileage.....

I've always tried to organize my home/work/activities to minimize as much as possible the time/cost/mileage.

Whilst I love to drive, I've found there is a huge difference between having to drive and taking a pleasure drive.

By reducing my "have to drive" miles, I save a significant amount of cash, which I can then apply to "want to drive" or.... maybe another car....

About 10 1/2 years ago or so I was working at a dealership and we took in a 5 year old E class (gasser) on trade. It had OVER 400,000 miles. The owner bought it new and he was a traveling salesman who's territory was most of the I 95 corridor between Jacksonville and Delaware/southern New Jersey. The only bad things were the driver's seat sagged, the D/S door hinges sagged and it blew some blue smoke on cold start up.

My "have to drive" miles are reimbursed (the current IRS rate is $0.50/mile), I suspect most folks that have to drive for business are in that situation.

I know two people who seem to rack them up.

One has a 2007 Camry that is has just about 100k on it, and my dads friend has a 2006 F150 that is probably at 225k now. The Camry is all work mileage, the F150 is mostly play.

OTOH I drive 12k miles a year and complain about gas and it costing to much.

December of '08, I only had 32K miles on the Jeep diesel. Then the first '87 300D got t-boned. Then in Jan 09 Freightliner laid us off. That required two round-robin trips between NC, FL, and TX to get a job nailed down, then the move down to TX. In April 09 when I got down here, the Jeep had 41K on it. Damn near 10K miles in 3 months.

But in my new job, I'm only 6 miles one way from work. Now the Jeep has close to 47K on it - only 6K miles in the last year. At that rate, I'll be too bloody old to drive by the time it even hits 100K.

My last pre-diesel car was an '87 Subaru wagon I bought brand new. When I retired from the Navy in '97, it only had 86K miles on it - that after several cross-country trips home on leave from Seattle to NC, and the final trip back to NC. When I finally let it go back in '05, it had 165K on it.

One thing I did discover during the 3 month 10K mile marathon last year - if you have to do a lot of long distance interstae driving, diesel is the only way to go - that 4500 lb brick of a Jeep Liberty averaged 32 mpg over the course of that mess.
