They just don't understand me!

This is my therapeutic rant.

The wife and two daughters just don't understand me. Do you understand me?

I have a "New York City" special - a 1990 300E 2.6 that I bought off some run down used car lot - the salesman neither shaved nor spoke much English. I bought the car about 2 years ago for $2,500 and it keeps on running. It may have a mysterious background, but it was a great find. The car has passed NJ inspection twice (at purchase and 2 years later), with clear records (no repairs necessary). I've done the usual brake replacement, new battery (twice).

I wash it, I waxed it this weekend. The muffler has been replaced - and it runs and runs. The girls just don't understand why I play with the car.

A tail light is out, and I've traced it to the Light Module - I used wiring diagrams, and took things apart. It was fun. I solved the mystery.

:-)) But they don't understand why I don't just trash the ole car.

To some people It's "old" Ergo it's worthless, out of date. in this day and age where everything is ment to be thrown away people just dont get that if you keep a car the more money you save. if you take care of that said car and it will pay you in the long run. Let them throw away everything, make car payments on cars they'll replace in 3-5 years and just keep truckin on the car you got.

You need a new wife and daughters. Or, you could explain to them that you like the car, you like working on it, it makes you happy and they should want you to be happy.

My wife doesn't really understand the car thing either, but she knows I like it.

Listen up young man, take care of your wife and kids. They will grow to love the 300E after seeing how much you care about it. It's a give and take world my man.

Tell the little Missus that trading in the old Mercedes for a new car would be like trading her in for a 23-year-old nubile blonde. Then run for your life.

I get that a lot with kids. I just say, "Whatever enjoy your car payments. I own this thing!"

There's something cool about driving an old car. I can tell people I drive a Benz and it makes me cool

You are completely normal. No further action necessary at this time.

Yesterday morning (Easter Sunday) my lady friend told me she needed to start getting ready to meet her girlfriends for a planned GTG luncheon - it was 9:30 a.m. She was to meet them at Noon. I didn't question why it was going to take her 2 hours to get ready. Instead, it freed me up to spend some quality time with my Mercedes-Benz - which she doesn't question.

I've found through observation that people seem to just think it is "right" to throw away vast quantities of money to drive a "new" car.....half the people at my workplace drive cars likely more than they can/should be able to afford, but they do it anyways.

I'll keep on enjoying my '82 and '90.....no payments, and they're awesome. My car blows the mind of people at my work....it is almost 3x as old as the next oldest car in the parking lot. Most of them simply don't understand when I say I am nearing 300k....oh well, their loss.

This reminds me of when I was a kid.
A neighbor over the back had a very old Ford Prefect, It was a heap of junk, The plates were from another car, it had no floor, possibly no brakes, I am sure you get the picture. My parents had warned us never to take a ride in it.

One day in mid winter with the rain & hail pelting down, I was walking home from school. The little old Prefect came down the road & stopped. The guy slid the window & said " do you want a lift home" He was trust worthy enough, but the car? He then said "A second class ride is better than a first class walk!". I got in & the heat of the motor soon dried & warmed me. I got home dry & warm.

The walk was being far from first class!!!

Sounds like your family need to be reminded of the alternate to having the car, mind you I am sure a ride in your car would not be second class !!!

I see your problem. You must only have one older MB. What you need is a fleet to make it look normal. I suggest you buy up 3, 4 maybe 5 more quickly. I'm up to 6 and the wife doesn't complain. We just took the hardtop off her '88 SL this past weekend. She was running around topless all day yesterday with a big smile on her face, er.... you know what I mean.
