slooow laptop -- how do I kill processes?

My Dell Latitude D630 running Windows XP is running slowly. When I open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab, I see 60 or so executable processes running. They have cryptic names like

MSASCui.exe
IFrmewrk.exe
ZCfgSvc.exe

1. How do I figure which ones are just hogging the processors and which are legitimate?

2. How do I close the ones that aren't necessary? Is there a quicker way other than end each process in Task Mgr?

3. How do I stop these from starting up when I reboot? I've already gone to the Control Panel and removed programs I don't recognize.

TIA

Take the Dell and chuck it in the nearest ditch and by yourself a "MAC". Problem solved.

Normally googling the process can help you.

MSASCui.exe is a part of the windows defender utility.
IFrmewrk.exe works with the intel proset wireless utility
ZCfgSvc.exe is zero configuration process related to the intel pro set wireless utility.

Normally ctrl+alt+delete will do the trick. However I use a program called Optimzie XP which has a nice optimize utility.

http://www.yamicsoft.com/

They're shareware so download and play with the trial. Running the optimizer once can fix a lot of issues.

Also by going to run and typing in msconfig you can prevent certain programs from starting and running on start up. Programs I tend to kill off are Junsched (java updater), itunes related stuff, etc none critical things.

Remember when in doubt google.

Finally, if your computer is still not up to speed consider doing a back up, wipe, and reinstall. I do this once a year on my Mac for the PC and OS X side of things.

Doing this rejuvenates a computer. IF you have the time I suggest this as it is the most straight forward and will speed up your computer. However time is one thing that will take forever.

I'm somehow milking along a D600 on Win7. Runs fast though. Every once in awhile FireFox will get to the point where its taking up literally 500+MB of memory. Needs to be killed and restarted. Also killing and restarting explorer.exe is also needed every few days.

I use a program called "enditall". It picks out programs that can be terminated without messing up the OS.

When you open up task manager, click on the CPU column header, that sorts by CPU utilitization. Click again if needed to get most active on top.

Click on the title to get it back in order by taskname.

Look and see if any are consistently sucking CPU and investigate them, a lot of tasks sit there doing nothing most of the time.

Google, do a local search and see where they are ...

Here's a link to AutoRuns, a Msft (Mark Russovich) utility that may help identify things starting automatically.

Hmm...are you running Intel Proset Tools? Specifically for wireless internet? If so uninstall and let Windows do it.

This is partly why I never buy name brand PC systems. I always build my own so I can perform clean installs of the OS without any proprietary crap bundled onto it. The software that comes pre-loaded on many systems can be an incredible CPU hog. Since those systems don't provide a Windows OS disc, but rather a set of recovery disks to boot the software-intensive image that it came with, it can be a severe PITA to remove all that crap.

My guess is that Proset is hogging your likely limited resources.

Putting a PC together used to take some skill and knowledge, however they are remarkably easy to build nowadays. Very simple and gratifying, I usually encourage people to do so. You learn a lot more about how it works and you gain valuable knowledge in dealing with issues. Just like working on your car...

Obviously laptops are harder to tweak, but if it has a decent processor and can be further expanded (memory, HDD), you can always buy an OEM version of Windows 7 and do a clean install. You can buy Win 7 Pro OEM for ~$100 now.

Good luck!

First find out how much RAM your system will take and load it up which is a cheap upgrade.

I typically set the pagefile to 1.5x the available system RAM but this is of course objectionable.

Goto the RUN window and type MSCONFIG

Once in the MSCONFIG window uncheck items in the STARTUP tab and that will help control the unwanted applications. Of course you have to identify each individual one otherwise you'll start noticing features that aren't working.

Also, don't shoot your machine, it's clearly useless in pieces.

You can go to task manager and to the processes tab and right click / kill process.
But unless you know what processes your killing, you may not be buying anything except more headache.

Sometimes, it's just worth backing up your machine and rebuilding the OS. It will clean things up. I try to do this every year to eighteen months.

As other posters have mentioned, Linux is now becoming a great alternative, especially if you are tired of spending money on software.
