slooow laptop -- how do I kill processes?

My Dell Latitude D630 running Windows XP is running slowly. When I open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab, I see 60 or so executable processes running. They have cryptic names like

MSASCui.exe
IFrmewrk.exe
ZCfgSvc.exe

1. How do I figure which ones are just hogging the processors and which are legitimate?

2. How do I close the ones that aren't necessary? Is there a quicker way other than end each process in Task Mgr?

3. How do I stop these from starting up when I reboot? I've already gone to the Control Panel and removed programs I don't recognize.

TIA
