Yes, most businesses will take US currency, but always at a rate that is favourable to the business. They'll make some money off the transaction, but probably not much more than your bank would charge you for currency exchange, which is only fair. Accepting your money is a service. They are probably as surprised that your business is missing a profit opportunity as they are that you don't reciprocate what we do up here.

Yeah, the attitudes you're seeing are a little rude. But honestly no different than you would see if it was working they other way - I've seen many American tourists respond rudely when told they can't have or do something they expect to be able to have or do. It comes from the same sort of place that Hatterasguy's comment about French Canadians comes from.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would bring foreign currency to another country because you'll never get a favourable exchange rate, even if it is accepted. Change it at home and save your money.

Maybe the drug store needs to place a poster near the cash register detailing the policy, that way you dont need to defend it. Just say you are only doing your job.

This past winter, I had the pleasure of running into some Canadians at a bar/comedy club in San Francisco.

They (husband/wife) were both very very nice, and very very well mannered. And were very curious about my background... But anyways, they had US currency, and were kind enough to buy me drinks at the bar that night.

After that night, Canadians are cool in my book!

Years ago I was in Guelph Ontario.
There was a shop called "Dutch Toko" where apart form the ladies wearing some kind of ridiculous outfit all prices were in Guilders.

The lady asked for 9 guilders, I gave her 10 (dutch currency) but she insisted on "Canadian Guilders" not Dutch.
