It's true most places here take American cash, as historically it has been worth more. I have never brought Canadian cash with me to the US and expected it to be accepted. I usually get some American cash at my bank and then just use my credit card for everything.

Our dollar has been strong the past couple of years, and even over par at times. You might be seeing a change in attitude where some Canadians expect US businesses to accept the currency on par, or close to it, due to this relatively recent change in rate.

I'm just guessing here. You are probably just seeing some jerks.

I find most average Canadians and Americans to be pretty similar. More alike than not. Except for guns and healthcare. And maybe sports teams. And beer. And...I'll stop there.
Zeus, I have no idea lol I guess so, area wise it's wealthy and it's not, further down the road toward the east it's very wealthy but where the actual store is isn't anything special. The FEW Canadians that I get that don't hassle me with the currency are very nice and pay with a credit card, for a nice, smooth transaction and everyone is happy.

Yeah I find all of us similar pretty much, the only thing is driving, old B.C. drivers, lord have mercy I shouldn't even speak of such things XD I seriously think I can run faster than them driving on the road while they are here. Still like to take a drive up to B.C. and to Whitehorse during the winter, you know me and cold temps!

The only problem with this, is that the pens are useless. They will only catch the laziest counterfeiters, those who print something out on their injet printer with the paper that they normally use.

Take a twenty and rub corn starch on it. Now try your pen. The twenty is still real.

Printing with a clean printer on starch-free paper will give you a nice brown line on a fake bill.

Next, take an ultraviolet lamp and shine it on a number of bills in various denominations. That's one test, and looking for the security thread is another. Sure, anything can be copied, but the more stuff you check, the better -- but only if that stuff actually can discern a real bill from a fake.

I don't know a place around where I live that won't accept american currency, coins and all... However, some find it rude that you don't reciprocate...
There was a place in texas where the owner was a money collector. He would take my money for his collection, as well as just about everyone else's to the extent that he had a full collection of that country's currency...

Back when I prepped race cars, we would go to Canada for the Mossport race. There's no big towns near the track so exchanging US to Canadian wasn't really possible. The food stands at the track accepted US dollars 1 for 1 for Canadian, which at the time was worth 75 cents, then give change in Canadian. We got hosed both ways.
It's not easy in the states to exchange currency and the vig to do so is high. I don't blame a business for refusing to accept Canadian currency.

We used to go up fishing every year. Most Canadians in small towns are very very nice.

They get sick of Americans coming up and spending money like water and resent that their money is usually worth less, so when ever it is worth more you cannot blame them for being excited about it.

Just smile and explain what the store policy is.

eh?.....you hoser!

L.O.L. to you both!

Also...certain things/places in the US take canadian quarters! Hahaha. You know, being silver, and round, and more or less the same size...sometimes people can't tell the difference if they aren't really paying attention. Or if you use a machine? I dunno. But I think I've seen that happen a few times.

Well it's not like it is the cashier's decision to NOT take Canadian money.

The unmentioned issue is going to the bank with them. I deposited some Canadian funds in mine and it took 3 weeks to get credit.

Years ago when Canadian money was only worth 70% or so of US, we used to get stuck with a lot of their coins. I would keep them in the car and use them in the city's parking meters. Somehow gave me a good feeling to make the city eat them since they were nailing us every chance they got.

Yes, most businesses will take US currency, but always at a rate that is favourable to the business. They'll make some money off the transaction, but probably not much more than your bank would charge you for currency exchange, which is only fair. Accepting your money is a service. They are probably as surprised that your business is missing a profit opportunity as they are that you don't reciprocate what we do up here.

Yeah, the attitudes you're seeing are a little rude. But honestly no different than you would see if it was working they other way - I've seen many American tourists respond rudely when told they can't have or do something they expect to be able to have or do. It comes from the same sort of place that Hatterasguy's comment about French Canadians comes from.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would bring foreign currency to another country because you'll never get a favourable exchange rate, even if it is accepted. Change it at home and save your money.

Maybe the drug store needs to place a poster near the cash register detailing the policy, that way you dont need to defend it. Just say you are only doing your job.
