Briggs & Stratton Parts - Where to Buy

A friend is in need of a crank and rod assembly for a 20 HP engine. Google seems to be of absolutely no help for this sort of thing.

Where is a good place to buy B&S parts?

Go on the B&S web site and see if the have a finder for a local distributor or if they will sell direct. I found that in my area there is a small engine repair shop/garden tool shop that can get just about anything I need.

I ordered directly from Briggs. I found their prices are quite good, and being a parts guy I prefer to look up my own parts.

http://www.partstree.com

Delivery was quick and easy, prices seem reasonable.

Note I ordered some parts for a Ryobi weed wacker from ereplacements several weeks ago. They said 1 to 2 weeks shipping, still waiting.

From B&S, we have:

Crank: 167.25
Rod: 31.40
Pin: 5.60
Piston: 73.20 std, 78.40 +.020
Gasket Set: 56.80

With the +.020 piston, that comes to 339.45. I don't know for sure that it needs a piston or pin, but chances are good that the piston should be replaced and the pin is cheap. That's a lot of scratch for an old lawn mower engine.

I found on www.smallenginesuppliers.com an engine with a different part number, but otherwise looks identical, for $450 plus shipping. Comes with everything but the exhaust. That might be a better way to go, unless it's possible to find a used crank.

I just bought a 2005 JD GX345 that the owner had let the 20HP Kawi engine run low on oil and seize up.

New crank, seals, upper bearing, 2 rods, fuel pump and gaskets came to $505 at partstree.com. I was really pleased with the service.

www.smallenginewarehouse.com is another place with great prices on complete engines.
