Dynamic vs Static wheel balancing...
I need to get my tires balanced - and I've read somewhere that I should ask for Dynamic Balancing.... if I just walk into the Firestone or Discount Tires store to get that done and say nothing else to the tech am I going to get Static Balancing by default or is that 'old school' these days?

Almost all tire balancing these days is "dynamic". That means the wheel and tire are rotated during the balancing process. This is opposed to "static" or "bubble" balancing where the wheel and tire are placed on a non moving hub that fits in a cone and the balance is seen my a bulls-eye level in the top of the cone.

I have not seen a bubble balancer in probably 20 years.

I think he's talking about the wheel balancers that actually apply roadforce/weight to the wheel.

I agree. The Hunter roadforce balancer seems to correct the shimmy that can't be cured. I've had great results from the local tire shop using a plain old "spin" balancer. The operator of any balancing machine is more a factor than the machine in a successful job.

LOL! Agreed!
Although issues with non-hubcentric rims, tread separation, and worn front-end components have created more frustration with the process of eliminatng of shimmy and wobble than a what simple balancing would cure...
