McChrystal quit/fired

anyhow he's out. He resigned, Obama accepted. Petraeus now in charge. What's that old Firesign Theater quote "How can you be in two places at once when you're really nowhere at all?" (or was that Zappa?)

"How does the porridge bird lay its eggs in the air?" I KNOW that was Fire Sign Theater.

What does that have to do with this thread? Hmmm, I don't know. I guess the general laid an egg . . .

You don't get to that rank (or years in service and protocol) in the military making those kind of gaffes...or does one in that position suddenly feel they are untouchable?

it has always been his MO, he is/was a rebel, but an incredibly skilled one, who made it to the top of a very small pyramid....it is possibly a great loss to the war, time will tell.

I would have sent him a text message and fired him.

It may have simply been he was frustrated and did not care if he got canned. And, if the war is percieved as a loss he can say he told us so and got out before the ship sank.

It will likely be years before we know the truth.

An example....

Patton slapped a Private and was relived of duty.

I have been told by those who shoud know that this was a ruse and never really took place. Eisenhower wanted Patton back in England to train an Army for the D-Day landing and did not want the Germans to know why he was really being pulled back to England.

Then the Allies made sure the Germans heard this story.

Patton was then put in charge of thousands of men who did not exist. Lots of paperwork and radio traffic when flying around and in this case the Germans were fooled into thinking that Patton was training a mighty army and they sent troops to prepare to meet them.

These were German troops that were in the wrong place on D-Day and that was what Eisenhower wanted.

Anyone else know if this story is true?

The quote about being in two places came from the Marx/Lennon Party. They worshiped Gracho Marx and John Lennon.

They were active around 1970. I think their main objective was to sell posters suitable for hanging in dorm rooms.

The poster was used by the Firesign Theater on the cover of one of their albums, but I don't remember if they came up with it first.

I seem to remember that story about Patton. He did lead the thrust to Germany though, too, after d day.

He is a very good general, time will tell if this was a good move.

Two points.

Very often when wars are going bad their is a lot of friction between the military and political command, this can lead to a lot of replacements.

Secondly the American army had/has a problem with replacing battlefield comanders to quickly. I don't know if this still happens but in WW2 we were to quick to sack comanders for screwing up something once, and not giving them a chance to settle in.

The actions of McC and his aides were beyond criticism, it was mockery.
Either one is not acceptable in the company of strangers.

Either or should have gotten him fired. He was lucky that Obama even alloed him to come home and resign. As I said, I wouldn't tolerate it from my subordinates so I wouldn't expect another supervisor to tolerate it. Too bad for McC that McCain didn't win the election. He'd have forgiven McC.

When Truman fired Mac, there was a point when Mac found out he was getting canned and was rumored to be ready to announce he would resign. Mac had designs on the Republican presidential nomination for 1952. Truman said something to one of his close aids like "I will not allow that SOB to resign. I am going to fire his a$$!"

Truman was known for his salty language....but never in front of women!
