Authorities in Switzerland have decided not to extradite film director Roman Polanski to the US to face sentencing for a case dating back to 1977.
Polanski, 76, has been under house arrest in his Swiss chalet since December 2009 pending the decision.
He is wanted in the US over a conviction for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The Swiss Justice Minister said the "measures of restriction on his liberty have been lifted."

He can go home to France any time he wants.

If this was some unknown guy wanted on 30 year old charges, no-one would care.

Maybe not...from what I read about the case, the girl was 13 years old, and was going to have regular intercouse with her, but after discovering that he didn't have a condom, he raped her anally.

I'm not defending him, just saying it wouldn't be a news story if he wasn't famous. I've also seen his victim interviewed recently.

The Swiss appear to be tired of working on this case. They claim that since the US never answered his defense attorneys contention that Roman had already served his time before leaving the US the US did not have a case.

I don't know what really took place, but I think the Swiss just got fed up with being caught in the middle of this and put into place a legal dodge that let Roman go back to Paris.

I think they would be happy for him to go anywhere just so long as this is no longer their problem. The warrant is still out on him, so the US has not given up.

First class on Lufthansa from LA to Prague is about $14,500 round-trip.

But it is a very nice trip!

Yet another sign that the world no longer fears us. We are doomed.

Gawd, the DOJ can't even get immigration and the Black Panthers' right. A 35 year old case is of little consequence to the U.S. relatively speaking.

Not 'wanted' but actually tried and convicted, THEN fled the country just prior to sentencing.

If he had been convicted, how come he was out & about so he could leave?
