Around here any deck less than 30" above the adjoining ground can go rail less. If you don't want folks walking off the edge by accident you could put a minimal thing such as posts with a cable or rope which would catch them and prevent them from backing off without blocking the view.

Preliminary planning indicates the deck hight somewhere around three feet. Not sure if local codes would require railings or not for that around here. The north and south sides would need them if I have to have them and don't have a multi level. The east side would be steps down to the porch.The west side would be up against the boundry wall so no railing would be required there. Seems I was a bit off in my initial measurements. It would have to be about 12 x 24.

My deck 'was' huge and at one time many wanted to sit on it. But, with wood shrinkage it is not admired as it once was. Sad...
