I need to get a city job in Bell, Ca.... Incredible Pay/Pension Scandal

Manage a town of 40k people and get $800,000 a year, plus a pension paying out 20 million during retirement? Where do I sign up?

Damn... That’s nuts.
I don’t see how it could get that far out of whack without someone catching it sooner. Nobody looked long term at 12%/year results? Wow....

Looks to me like the system of “checks and balances” went unchecked and way out of balance.

I wonder how the town will do with so many of the department heads resigning (nearly) all at once.

Better yet, work part time as a city councilman and get 100k a year. That's not too greedy...

yes, its a dump. it was forty years ago when i was growing up in a town not far from it. not really sure that partisan politics is the reason why... but i would expect nothing less from you.

again, i recommended "the parable of the cave". (it's easy to find. even wikipedia has a page on it.)

"not really sure that partisan politics is the reason why... but i would expect nothing less from you"

Partisan politics is the effect not the cause! For people who don't fend for themselves it's always easier to vote to have others fend for them rather than accepting personal responsibility. If a community can't avoid what has happened in Bell regarding their own local government why should communities who successfully and responsibly self-govern be concerned or in anyway responsible. Why should taxpayers elsewhere fund the orresponsible government of others.

Rather symptomatic, wouldn't you say?

From the voting stats, unfortunately it looks like they (California) deserve themselves - in so many words...

Some have been complaining for months here and elsewhere on the Net - about "reversals in fortune" if you will.

Some guy I knew as an on-line pal that lives in a San Fernando Valley suburb just north of L.A. was so far upside-down in his personal and business lifestyles when the recession hit - first with the gasoline prices on the Moon (he owns several company trucks - was a big-wheel remodeler), he never knew what hit him. He's so busy working for insurance re-build scraps and partime work out there - he is likely on anti-depressants and he doesn't post anymore. It wouldn't surprise me if he was almost homeless by now. To me, it was all rather easy to predict all in all...

this is pretty much how I think. people choose to not be self-responsible and would rather vote for someone to feed and bathe them. self-governing requires people to be independent, something they gave up long ago......

and, yes, to the previous post concerning "communities who successfully and responsibly self-govern". guess it depends upon what one's definition of "successful" is because I haven't seen any that do it in a meaningful way......

Just think: he gets paid 20.00/person to "manage"

If the President got paid that way, he would make 6 billion dollars a year.

Then he could go golfing with warren Buffett, Bill Gates and George Soros.
