To say that I was a frequent visitor to NOLA would be an understatement. I have been known to pop off on a weekend morning just to have lunch as the variety of cuisine is very much to my liking.
Dangerous City? Probably no more that any larger city and definitely NOLA gets a bad rap from Katrina. The same precautions should be taken as traveling in any big Metro City. Smells – just always smelled like NOLA to me little Creole and stale beer. Nobody can duplicate it. NOLA on Line is a good source to check out what is happening the week you are there. A couple of good places personal choices are: Royal Sonesta in the 300 Block of Bourbon – Johnny Mayfield’s Playhouse. Usually after 10PM they feature a free Cabaret Show. It is tastefully risqué but enjoyable. Nothing hard core here, the audience will be about 50% female and it won’t offend anyone. Probably one of the better FREE shows in the Quarter. The Omni is on the east side of Canal so you are just about 5 blocks away. Food – My favorites are the Vineyard located on Orleans Street this is a local eatery across from the Bourbon Orleans Hotel. Great Steaks, wonderful prices. Bourbon Orleans is in the 900 block of Bourbon and this is where straight and gay intersect. Further up Bourbon everything gets happier. There is a great cigar store next to Vineyard also. John Besch has two places in town August and John Besch Steak house, he is a great restaurateur. Other favorites are Mothers, Mulates, Brennans and the list goes on. Just remember what happens in New Orleans stays in Las Vegas – have fun.

not sure if you are a drinker but the bulldog tavern on magazine is a great place... if you want good BBQ there is a place called "the Joint" over in gentilly and if you want to travel farther then you cant beat the shed... there is one in gulfport and another in vancleave which is just east of ocean springs... the food is the same at both but the atmosphere at the vancleave one is better by far
