You know what I like about this forum most?

Unlike other forums I pass thru daily, pretty much everybody here can actually READ and there is no real difficulty in making one's point understood. You should all go back and thank your parents and teachers.

Are you suggesting that we haven't?

Unfortunately, There Are Some Students That Aren't As Lucky

One of the complaints alleges that the Arizona Department of Education has reclassified "many thousands" of children as proficient in English even though tests indicate they aren't. The U.S. Departments of Education and Justice concluded this deprives students of services they need to succeed.

People who own Mercedes products are going to be from the leisure classes, lay-abouts who have nothing better to do than to refine their language skills as they post what they know on Wikipedia. Dad-do preferred the Country Club.

'Course not, just do it again.

I've read that link. I taught ELL students prior to retiring. Tom Horne's comment that AZ is being picked on by the feds due to 1070 is just tea party hogwash coming from a politician. There's nothing wrong with the AZELLA test as tests go, but no test in my opinion can assess language proficiency with anything close to accuracy. The article leaves out some pretty important information. Several years ago, 3 to be exact, I retired. My exit from full time teaching came at the exact time that the state was in trouble with feds over ELL students not receiving services. Yup, this isn't the first time by a long shot. The state gave school districts funding to hire teachers for ELL pullout classes and mandated that all ELL students MUST receive 4 hours a day in language immersion classes. This was a complete reversal of the state's position of a few years prior, wherein they decided that these kids only needed to be mainstreamed into regular classes and somehow receive extra instruction from their already overburdened regular teachers. So they hired me back half time. My little country school only had 20 identified ELL students at the time and I got to work specifically with them all morning on language. Kids who'd been failing the AZELLA for years managed to pass. It was a great job and I got to go home at noon and collect my pension
and a half salary to boot. At the end of the year, the state cut the funding and then the dept. of ed. decided all of a sudden that it wasn't necessary for these kids to be pulled out and they'd put the burden of the tracking and testing paperwork onto the regular classroom teachers and hold them accountable for proving that their ELL students were receiving additional language instruction in their regular classes. I personally hope the feds nail the state big time. ELL instruction has been an underfunded hot potato in this state for decades. It's nothing new. On top of everything else, under No Child Left Untested, I mean Behind, all those ELL students MUST take the AIMS test, (AZ Instrument to Measure Standards, passing required for HS graduation) cannot have any help in their own language on it, and their results are NOT disaggregated from the native english speaking student population before the state determines whether or not a school is a performing or underperforming school. Chronically underperforming schools can and have been taken over by the Dept. of Ed, their staffs dismissed and a cadre of "experts" is installed to revamp instruction. A school with a majority of ELL students is pretty well doomed to be underperforming without adequate staff funding. As it stands right now, ELL instruction is not funded by the state, and classroom teachers have to fill out individual education plan paperwork for all their ELL students. A meaningless hoop to jump through. It's complete BS. I hope the feds nail this state to the wall. Sorry about the rant, I guess it's a hot button for me

You're right. Of course if the ****ing feds did their damm job and closed the border to begin with schools wouldn't be in this mess either.

Mercedes owners are usually more mature than say BMW owners who seem to stop development in the 8th grade.
