Shipping A Vehicle

Hi guys...I've never actually shipped a vehicle since all of my deals have been local...either private party or dealer...

I plugged in a rough quote online and there were two companies that had decent rates (all were pretty similar in cost)...

The companies:
Fox Auto Transport - BBB rating A-
All Auto Shipping (part of united intermodal group) - BBB rating A

How trustworthy would those BBB ratings be?

Anybody have experience with this sort of thing?

The car is going from SC to NJ and the seller has been great thus far and I'd like this to be pretty seamless and hassle-free for both of us...

Overall the quotes of roughly $475 are a fair bit less than if I were to rent a trailer and truck and drive there and back...

The only downside is I'd be buying the car sight unseen...which I can accept given the detailed photos and descriptions...

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Have you checked out uship.com? Shipping companies bid for your business and have ratings, comments, etc. I've used them before.

Never ever buy anything sight unseen.

That includes but not limited to; cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, boats, jet skis, farm and construction equipment, raw land, commercial real estate, homes, farms, and women.

There's an unlimited number of stories even here on this forum of getting the living s___t scr#wed out of them by buying something sight-unseen.

One in particular between shall I say two forum members that comes to mind.........

100% of my past sight-unseen vehicle purchases have been misrepresentations.

Run as fast as you can from it.

I'd fly, but same result. Getting to look the vehicle over before laying out hard earned cash is a must for me.

In a perfect world I would...but there are a few minor issues that might prevent me from doing such a thing...

Slight leak in the brake booster and the PS needs a flush...so...I'd probably rather just have it shipped and take care of those two things in my driveway before really driving it regularly...

Me too. I recently shipped my mother's Honda CRV from NY to Wisconsin and they were the most reasonable.

For a really nice car I would use Horseless Carriage Transport. I used them to ship my Impala SS up from Florida. They put it in an enclosed trailer which I liked. www.horselesscarriage.com

I am headed to Myrtle Beach SC this weekend. If it is anywhere in that vicinity, I might could check it out for you early saturday morning.

I can check it for everything minus a compression test.

That's extremely nice of you to offer...

Edit: Car is in Sumter which is almost two hours from Myrtle Beach I believe...so that's a hike...

But still...thanks so much for the offer!

Good luck tho

X2 sight unseeen comments.

My CE I bought in Tampa. The seller said he'd pick me up at the airport and if I didn't like the car, he'd take me back. Fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. I brought it home to NJ on the Autotrain. Only problem with that mode is that it doesn't make any stops between Sanford FL and Lorton VA. IIRC the cost was in somewhere bewteen $200-$300. It's been 9 years.
I wasn't buying it without a test drive AFTER a PPI had revealed a few things that needed attention which we worked out prior to my departure.

I did buy a car sight unseen from a guy in Tidewater around that time too. It was for my daughter. Clean car. Well represented. The seller arranged the shipping for me.

In both those transactions, I was fortunate to have reputable sellers. Lucky me!

I bought my 240D (from a forum member) based on photos and phone calls. I flew to NJ to pick it up and drove it home. It worked out very well, but I trusted the seller and we are not talking about a large amount of money.
