Is there a book of guidelines for automotive manufacturing?

That outlines some common expectations for road worthy vehicles.

Not so much DOT stuff like headlights and sheetmetal...

more like: 'distance on a full tank of fuel' , 'agility in various road conditions'

etc... more general demands.

There are a number of Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (MVSS) that have been around, more and more, since the 1970s. They do include durability and test performance criteria.

Does that help?

I think the marketplace would take care of the 'general demands'. It used to be that a heater was optional as was an oil filter. Now they are everywhere.

The same with electrical wipers and tail-lights on both sides of a car.

I assume there are some handbooks of automotive design that include that type of info. Sorry, I don't have any specific examples.

yes, I know there are 'books' with that info.

I was hoping for some well-known standard by SAE or etc.. Like 'the bible' of basic auto engineering standards or basics guidelines.

One of you guys would have mentioned something if it existed.

SAE has many options and I am not sure what I am looking for.

thanks though.

What you are asking about is a huge subject; I suspect there are many volumes on each individual aspect of the design. I have a sizable two volume book on just basic engine design from an undergrad class I took 30-something years ago. I also have another sizable book on suspension design. I can only imagine the complexity of crash integrity, aerodynamics, traction/brake controls, human factors, etc.

Yeah.. I am very unfamiliar with what I am asking about / the field.

Where should I look for a list of design groups?

I'm not an automotive engineer either. I would probably start here:

Just study your Mercedes, and you will see the "right" way to do almost everything.
