My youngest daughter refuses to communicate with me by any means save text messages. That has not been an easy adjustment to make. My mind refuses to work in "textspeak" and will only formulate written communications in letter format, will not produce unintelligible sentences, nor willingly misspell words.

My son's phone is not able to send or receive texts, access the internet or purchase ringtones or such. Why not disable hers also? You are the parent- not a friend, you can do it.
I think it's my job to prepare my sons for the future- and having them understand technology is important. Having technology and the use of it can also be a detriment to proper communication- it seems that is what is happening. Of course you be the judge, but if your child's future is dimmer due to excess texting action on your part would be in order.

While you're at it, you can also lock them in a box and keep them in the basement.

The neighbors would be mad if I did that. My 15 yo walks and takes care of four elderly neighbors' dogs. He also makes a bit of side money helping with gardening and stuff around their homes. It pays for some of his skateboard equipment. My younger ones are so hungry for knowledge it's silly- they want to follow Luis and watch everything he does so they can do it also. It slows him down and they ask non stop questions, and in light of this the neighbors actually pay my two younger ones to stay home while Luis comes over, lol.
