Study Says Popular Joint Supplements Don't Work

Ineffective, Either Alone or in Combination

Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements have been popular for years among people with arthritic knees or hips. According to the authors of the study, worldwide sales of the supplements reached almost $2 billion in 2008.

I had Knee trouble following a knee cap fracture as a teen. It was on going for about 30 years. The other knee started to give trouble, probably because of the extra load put on it. Since about 1995 I have taken glucosamine & have not had any knee problems. Prior, I used to have at least 1 dislocation each year.
It has worked for me!!
This week, I have been in hospital having a shoulder operation; rotator cuff repair and other work following an injury about 18 months ago. The surgeon had me stop taking it 3 months ago in prep for the shoulder work. My knees have been some what 'wonky' during this time. I am due back on the glucosamine in a couple of months.
If its only a placebo, its a good one !!

deadlifts & strength training = best medicine out there (so long as you don't overdo it)

Ohhh, I don't know. I always found that a little hash oil dribbled onto the paper before.... Wait. They're talking about something different. Never mind.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if it's effective for many humans - I know it works wonders in dogs. I've seen huge improvements in three of mine over the years, and know pf many others.

My mutts are smart, but suggesting they are capable of a placebo effect is a bit of a stretch...

It has definitely worked for me, although the effects are not immediate. It takes 2 or 3 months or more to work.

I've often wondered how an oral supplement of glucosamine would ever make it to the joints in the body where it's needed. There is injectable veterinary glucosamine made for horses and dogs and I've seen it work wonders on competition horses in as little as 6 weeks. I used it off label once on a dairy goat doe who became lame from infectious arthritis with good results. I wonder why nobody's come up with an injectable human version?
It's called Adequan (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan). My vet tells me with a wink that he's "heard" of veterinarians with arthritis who use it on themselves.
Now that there's prescription fish oil, you'd think the drug companies would jump on a prescription injectable for people. Or maybe one already exists.

Well placebo or not I think they have helped me.

I have very bad knees, they float due to badly stretched ligaments many many years ago. Also a family history or arthritis, along with past xray where the Doc says nothing really wrong except degenerative arthritis (neck), and severe degenerative arthritis in my foot.

I started taking glucosamine years ago, the problems have at least stabilized.
Athough I do get a fair amount of exercise, figure 5 to 10 hours a week guarding at the roller rink.

At 57 (almost) you figure the exercise I get from a 6 hour session on skates, I don't stop or sit generally for the entire time, maybe to adjust the boot.
I go through a gallon of water and don't usually hit the bathroom.

Had a friend bet me I couldn't do an aerobics class, I joined his for one hour, when it ended I said ok we're warmed up when does the workout start.
He's 10 years younger and was about ready to die, it was an advanced session.

My Doctor, who also skates, looked at me a few months ago and said you probably should get a stress test, oh wait your still guarding right, yup I do almost every Saturday night and often a session during the week, ok we'll skip that.

But I think, even if it's the placebo effect, the glucosamine has helped.

PS I think skating is about the best exercise you can get, well on par with swimming. It's a full body workout (I often wear wrist weights to add to the burn), that gains you tremendous balance. Even on my skates it is very difficult to knock me down.
