Went to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries today!

I'm currently in the Nagasaki airport waiting for a flight to Yokahama, so sorry the pictuers will have to wait til I have a better connection to the web.

I went to the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries campus today. Its more then just a factory. We went to see the turbin shop where they make steam turbines. My dads company uses them in geothermal power plants. But Mitsubishi is much more then turbines for power plants. the turbine shop was originaly built for powering ships. and only in the last 50 years has it been making turbines for power plants. The main part of the campus was the dry docks of the shipworks where they still make ships today. they have been making ships for over 150 years! the first "plant manager" was a Shogun. Its been around a while!

I've torued 3 factories at the build steam turbines and this was by far the most interesting. they had a history museum on site that was full of infromation and machines from the history of Mitsubishi.

I'll post pictures from the museum and from my visit to Nagasaki later.
until then here is a wiki link to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Heavy_Industries

This is a diesel from a tug boat. a small diesel for Mitsubishi, but it fit in the museum building, so its their example of a diesel... pretty large by our standards.

this is a chunk of a turbine rotor that exploded in the vacuum chamber and landed in Nagasaki bay. it was on display at the museum to remember the importance of using the highest quality materials, and in honer of the 4 people who died in the explosion.

Its pretty famous in Japan, at least among the engineers I talked to. when I told them I went to Mitsubishi they all would asked "did you see the rotor that exploded?"

It exploded during a vibration test. We witnessed the turbine vibration test at Toshiba for the turbines my dads company had bought from them. after seeing that exploded rotor I have to tell you its even more impressive when you see them run the test and the rotor has almost no vibration.

There have been a few large steam turbine failures in the US as well, usually caused by stress induced cracks in turbine wheels that a shrunk fit onto shafts. You wouldn't want to be around a 3600 rpm turbine failure; the pieces tend to have some energy and try to leave the zip code.

I cant even begin to imagine all the things they have to account for when they design these turbines must have been one helluva vibration, pretty neat to see

SirNik,
I take it that it is a steam turbine & it is fed with reasonably high pressure steam ?
What does it drive?
