My friends who have graduated in nursing (then passing the RN tests and such) are making BANK right out of college. Must be nice

I think schools are cranking them out as quickly as they can while maintaining their programs' integrity.

I can understand the problem.
All the nurses I've seen joke around way too much.

It really depends where you work. Nurses in the Detroit area start out around 28,000.

It also depends on your certification: LPN RN and surgic al certs as well. Plus experience REALLY does matter.

I had a bad experience with a young nurse who didn't know how to insert a catheter when I needed one. Despite the agony of needing to go, I waited two more hours rather than let an inexperienced person jam one of those in me.

The trick is to move to an area where there is a shortage.

Most people think they can stay in one place, not so much. I've been ready to move anywhere I can find work out of college.

Yes, experience and specialized certification is paramount. My OH took a position in Washington DC for excellent compensation. They also fly her home and pay lodging\local transportation\meals.

Maybe try China or India. Pay might not be great, but its work.

An RN is a 2 year degree isn't it? Fastest way to a $60k/year job.

Associate degree, yes. Promotion isn't as fast though.

Ask my wife and the ER personnel and you might have a different answer. The nursing home nurses are really the low point of nursing. They often laugh at how stupid and lazy they are so I doubt they will agree that the program's integrity is always there.

After all, they work shifts like the hospitals and they get way lower pay. As a doctor said about them "There is a reason why they are here".

LPN takes about 2 years. In theory, if all is right you can get your Associate Degree and have your RN license within 2 years. Bachelor of Science is about 4 years if all goes right. Lets Play Nurse can be done in 1 year if you don't screw up anything but you won't have much of a career since you can't do much and they are being phased out.

My wife has been a nurse at the same hospital in Savannah for 24+ years and is a charge nurse on her floor. She does good.
