Hints on repair of flatbed scanner?

Guys - my flatbed scanner - Microtek ScanMaker X12 USL - has a short and keeps blowing the fuse. I took it apart but cannot figure out how to spot a short. Does anyone have a suggestion? Is there some way to use my multi-tester to ID the short?

I think it got water in it. Sprayed a few spots with elec spray but it still blows the fuse.

Will try to attach a couple of pictures. I sure hate to throw it in the trashcan.

Thanks.

Don't forget when working on power supplies the rule is to keep one hand in your pocket at all times!

First guess would be a rectifier diode. You'll have to unsolder one end of each diode to test it. Second guess is whatever is attached to that heat sink. If it's a transistor, you can really only test it by substitution of a known-good part. You can test the diode effect of each junction if it is of bipolar design. If it fails that test, it's dead.

Are scanners so expensive today that you need to waste time diagnosing it or is this a school project?

Nope, I just enjoy fixing things and seeing how they work. Not a dollar consideration.

Moderator - that said, you can cancel this thread. I sent the scanner to the trash today. Found the underside of the board was completely rusted, wire brushed it to no avail. Still popped the fuse. On to the trash.

Go to your local resale shop. I work in one in S. Tx. and we nearly give scanners away.

I had a weird problem with my HP scanner. I was scanning some pics for an auction flier and kept getting hundreds of little black spots on my scans. Came to find out that my scanner had been taken over by ants. I took the scanner apart and cleaned it, the ants were easy to kill because they were all blind from the scanner lights.

I COMMAND you to get the scanner out of the trash. Us Rednecks can fix anything. I once fixed a VCR with some Beer and a Q-tip.

Guys, I have another scanner. I just hate to throw anything away that can easily be fixed. Hope the trash man comes this week so I do not have to deal with misgivings.
