Most likely because a w126 can't safely tow a 3500lb car + flatbed trailer

I'm not sure about that, especially if it has SLS. I often used to see volvo 240's and W123 or Citroen wagons pulling trailers and caravans in the UK where most people only own one car. They don't usually go more then 45mph but it does not look unsafe.

that looks like a uhaul trailer, I cant believe they let him off the lot

That's not uhaul, they are open on the bottom.

The combined weight would be about 6000 pounds.

I would worry about blowing a head gasket.
