Windows XP question
I am running XP and something keeps rebooting my PC at overnight and it hangs and never comes back up (thats how I know it rebooted) until I turn the PC off and on again. As far as I know, none of my programs *should* reboot the computer. Is there a way to tell if a program is trying to do that? I have automatic updates turned off and have killed most programs that are running like SPAM blockers, etc.
thanks Fred Emmerich

Do a VScan, MalWareBytes or your choice.
Verify you do not have sleep enabled, it should come out of it, but I never trusted it. But I'd vote for a hardware issue. Make sure you have a backup NOW, in case it's the HD. Beyond that. Maybe open up the case, make sure everything is seated tight. Consider removing each part carefully wiping the connector and reseat. Clean inside too, they get dusty and that causes heat problems. Check that all the fans are working correctly, including CPU and Video card (if applicable).

It is very hard to say what it is with looking around on the PC first. I can remote into your PC and take a look for a fee.
How old is the PC? It could also just be impending hardware failure.

PC is 5 years old. Good quality stuff. I have an e-mail program written years ago that will not shut down when the PC tries to shut down. I leave that program running and my PC never reboots. I figured if it was a hardware failure, it would act like a power burp as if the switch was thrown. So I am assuming some program is shutting it down, but I do not know why it will not come back as in a real reboot.
Ran all the scans, everything is clean.

5 years of 24/7 use brings the average PC to near its end....as various things begin to die. Depends on the conditions and the hardware, but 5+ years is when failure really starts to set in.

When you say it hangs, at what screen does it hang?
You might benefit from taking a peep at the event viewer and seeing if any events listed there are related to your problem. If you need help with that let me know. I can give you some guidance on how to access/read/etc or I'm sure google will give you some insight. Hope this helps
