I have owned tuxes since my 20s. Bought my current one in the 90's, it was expensive, but worth it. If you go to an event where you really want to look good, a rental tux, aint gonna cut it. Same with suits: find the best suit you can and buy a couple. it will cost you, but if you shop wisely and avoid trendy details, you will have those most of your adult life.

If you want to run in those circles spend the money on a good tux, most people don't so they just rent them. Its not your friends fault that they don't have them, if they want to hang with you at the parties they will purchase them, if not they won't.

I used to go to a few socials yearly, so after the first year, the tux was paid for. I occasionally would get a new shirt and a set of cuff links and buttons that matched and it looked pretty spiffy for little money

Now is a GREAT time to buy a tux, you can get a 500.00 one for maybe 75-100 NEW.

This is the dry season for tuxes everywhere except Cali. get someone to buy one that is one size too big, get it sent to you, then have it tailored.

And get a tie that you can tie, not one of those cheesy clip-ons.

Every woman that I have ever taken out in a formal except one noticed the tie and was amazed I could tie it.

Go to a bow tie shop, they give free lessons.

Roger that on the tie it yourself bow tie. cummerbund, if worn, should be tasteful and small.

I like tuxes, I like cool occasional clothes. I also had a set of dress blues, mess dress blues and mess dress whites. When the occasion called for it, there was nothing better....

My problem is that I can't seem to stay at one weight. It varies +/- 30 lbs. from year to year, season to season.

Cheap rental tuxes and suits look exactly that. Cheap. A good shop will be able to hook you up with a quality one. Fortunately for me, there's a good shop in town. Including weddings and funeral, I have to wear a suit 2 or 3 times a year. If I factor dry cleaning in, it's a wash...har har...rent vs. own.

I don't own one now, but I certainly did when I was in my 20-30s and had to attend formal events on a more regular basis. I generally try to avoid formal events these days, but if you need a formal dinner suit it's worth buying one (it's not a "tux" unless you are going to the junior prom).

Seriously is it that difficult to own a tux? I literally ranted to all my bros that real men own a business suit and a tux just for the possibility of something like this. And besides the awesome networking opportunities it is, none of them bother to go out and buy one.
I'm sure my daughter's bosses were at the Grammy's, but I doubt she was anywhere near there..or at any pre-parties.
She works for a mega entertainment company in BH.

A business suit ?

What do you wear to the second interview? The Tux?

It's $150 to rent a tux for a few days, so if you bought one for under a grand it would pay for itself assuming you have a social life.

It is a bit of a shame that men's coture has devolved in many ways to it's current embrace of "casual wear" for every occassion. Heck, we don't even dress up to drive anymore . . .

Darling Wife was just lamenting the fact that the (amazing, way cool) new Google Art Project toys that take you inside and around the grounds of some of the world's greatest museums - reveal whole flocks of people in shorts and t-shirts wandering around Palace of Versailles.

My collection of suits until very recently consisted of one interview suit, and one funeral suit. Of course, they're pretty much interchangeable. Heading into last Halloween, we went on something of a bargain hunting binge, and I now own another 4 or 5 suits and a handful of hats, as well (ebay FTW! - didn't pay more than $25 for any of the suits).

Also found that Ed's blue velvet Yves St. Laurent sport coat from the early 70's fits me perfectly. Has provided substantial grins and giggles when me and Darling Wife play dress up to go out.

I rented a tux once, in high school. It did not fit well, and cost about $200. My dad has a tux, for the rest of my high school career I used his tux. It also did not fit well, but it was free to barrow for the evening.

I own a 3 dress shirts, 3 pairs of dress pants... in assorted business standard colors. I also have a pair of black boots and I don't get dirty, and keep polished. This gets me through every fancy event since my graduating from high school. All the formal events I go to involve engineers... there is bound to be someone showing up in plaid, so I'm never under dressed.

I'd like to have a tux, but until I have a need I'm not going to spend the money.

just for laughs, here is me dressed fancy... I'm the guy in the hat!

The hat is more than enough for a formal event in Texas!

Guess I'm the unique one. I've been using my tux for formal parties and orchestral performances at least three to four times a year since 2006. More parties then anything else. I even own cuff-links, those black little button clips, and a pocket watch (alright my grandfather gave that to me ).

Never mind then

The place I am working at out here in Los Angeles asked if I was interested in attending and said I would need a tux to go. Sure enough that problem was already satisfied.

Well then, I guess my rant thread was rather pointless like all of my other rant threads!
