If I shot a man...

...in Reno

Just how would I come to be in a California State prison? I've always wondered, and never heard anything to explain the descrepency. I suppose it's possible that I committed an even greater crime than murder in CA, and Nevada extradited me, but it seems likely that I'd mention that when telling my story. If I murder, say, a diplomat, or some sort of federal official, does that make my crime a federal offense? And if so, would the feds just put me wherever was easiest? I'd have thought I'd end up in a federal prison.

I've been puzzled by this for some time now. Any ideas?

Suppose it would depend on when it happened. I'm assuming your referring to Folsom Prison Blues.

Folsom is the oldest prison in CA because back before there were movies in CA there was Gold! and believe it or not back during the 1850s Folsom was more or less the center of the gold rush. Towns like Auburn and Placerville were at the heart of the gold fields, and Folsom was the next town before Sacramento. This area of CA back in those days would have been the center of population. In 1880 this demanded the construction of a prison.

Since the population in the gold country would be analogous to the population of LA, and the population of Reno that of Barstow, and assuming that you killed the man in Nevada, but made it back to gold country... you would have likely gone to Folsom because it would have been the closest prison.

I never really understood the song ether, but looking into the history of this area, it would not surprise me if thats the way it went.

BTW, I'm about a mile from Folsom Prison as we speak!

Can't speak for Reno and Folsom but if you would murder a federal official while he/she was in preformance of his/her duties, you would be tried in federal court and sent to a facility which would probably be a maximum security lockup and, as a former employee of the federal courts, I can tell you that they are places where you do not want to go.

The federal court has sentencing guidelines and no parole, just a tiny bit of good behavior time. It is curious that federal courts give sentences in months. We once had a guy get 370 months for a series of bank robberies. He looked at his lawyer and said "How much is that in years?"

The lawyer replied "You really don't want to know!"

I always wondered why he would want to roll on down to San An'tone. I mean, it's a nice place and all, but why didn't he want to get off in Vegas?

So many questions, so little time......

Madoff is in Butner Federal Correctional Facility which is a medium security prison because he is a non violent offender.

Madoff's deal was a complicated, convoluted scheme created by a master schemer. Just because a man is a sociopath doesn't mean he isn't capable of taking others in who are willing to 'trust in the Bernie'. His story is not that unusual, there have been others before and others to come like him because some people like to believe in the 'pied piper' or something for nothing idea.

His last name says it all..........

Bernie MADE OFF as in MADE OFF WITH YOUR MONEY.
