Stitching's easy. I normally do my own for small to medium cuts. Sub-Q lidocaine has little effect on heartrate, IM will affect it greatly. Normally I don't even stitch a 1 inch cut. If there's no arterial bleeding, I wash it out first with peroxide, then 7% iodine, wait till bleeding gets to the sticky stage, and glue it shut with superglue gel or NuSkin, same thing. Then I paint another layer of glue over the cut. A shot of long acting antibiotic and that's it. I've had lots of secondary infections from stitches, none when I use superglue and virtually no scarring.
I would imagine that scale is a factor here as well. A 1 inch laceration on a horse is probably as big of a deal as a 1 inch laceration of a Min-Pin (she s 5 pounds) She would have had to be sedated a bit at least since she is very hyper and would not have sat still while being stitched up.

How many ounces of alcohol would it have taken to sedate her?

No idea. Can you give alcohol to a dog? Since I don't drink it probably would not take to much to sedate me.

The wife does have a bottle of Makers Mark......

I did check with the local emergency clinic and they told me that your charges are pretty much in line with what they would charge for an after hours visit. If it can wait, obviously it would be a lot cheaper.

They don't get that many clients at night so it is kind like an ER visit vs a MD scheduled visit.

I completely agree. I did all of the work on my bulldogs. From an entire chest being opend, to split lips. Had medical staples, and the removal tool. A dog will flinch a little at first, but then just wait for you to finish. Trick is to not become panicked when you see the wound, your panic is what flakes the dog out.

My wife paid a $12,000 vet bill!

Her horse had a bad case of colic which is very serious in horses. We rushed him up to the University of of Pennsylvania horse hospital in New Bolton, PA. He had surgery there and is now doing very well almost 3 years later.

Just curious, but how much does a new horse cost?

The recent New Yorker has an article about Paul Haggis, a longstanding member of the Church of Scientology and a screenwriter who resigned from the church because of its attitude towards gays.

Depends on the dog. My pit bull bore pain very well. My Peis, not so good. Even cutting their nails, they wiggle and try to pull away. I don't know much about min-pins but most of the smaller dogs are too fidgety

It's the wiggling that makes the sewing hard. We had an old pei that we gave some of my pain meds to and she was getting drowsy so it was ok. I restrained her and the wife sewed up a 2 inch gash a quarter inch deep. Without those meds of mine, the dog would be struggling. Pushing a needle in and out, you cannot have struggling.

When I fractured my pelvic ring and the RN was trying to push a needle in me and didn't do it well, I fired her and had my wife do it. I'm in pain and you want to go digging around my arm? Sorry. 3 strikes and you are done. I was holding still then. Try doing it with the wiggling and life gets a lot more difficult. With Bulldogs and Pit Bulls and Rotts, it is easier than a poodle. Those don't bear pain well

Thanx, you brought up a needle memorie I tried to forget. Had a knee surgery, and they did a lower block. (wont talk about how it feels when you wake up and cant feel ..ANYTHING' below the waist). Anyway, the needle installation nurse has me sit, and bend forward, to open my spine. There are 2 channels in the vertebra, she missed the correct channel, and hit my cyotic nerve. I couldnt move becuase she has the needle in my spinal canal- but the pain was shooting light an electric volt from the point of the needle, all the way to my toe.

She got fired as well. Got another nurse who garenteed me she would hit the right place.

This RN was a friend of the wife's but she worked in the Child Mindfawk unit where they are little more than glorified babysitters. As such, she didn't have enough practice doing what she was supposed to do. Stick it in and going digging around isn't my idea of a good time. Much less when I am in pain. She was saying I was a difficult poke. I already had my temper under control by the 3rd stick. Transferred responsibility to the wife who did it in 1 poke. If you think I am going to be your pin cushion or practice dummy, you got another think cumming. Go learn on someone else

Same thing w/me when I have to get stitches. I am already in pain, so I forbid the doc to go sticking a needle around in the wound in an effort to numb the pain.
It just doesnt make sense to create more pain.
Cleanit..stitch it, bandage it, collect my payment. See ya, have a nice day.

The trick is to stick you with a lidocaine shot so you won't feel the next shot. WTF? I still get one stick that I can feel. Why not do it right the first time?

Ya think? Who came up with that silly policy for a needle. Stick you so you won't feel the next shot???

I wish they would every time. Sometimes they don't. In which case, they are so fired. Where you are, the doctors think they are god since the population is more subservient. They don't like to be told anything. Tell them what worked in the past and they get pissed. Sorry, I don't need your crap. Last few times I went there, I had a stash of my own meds. As long as there is a phone and I can call the wife, I'm good. If it cannot be treated easily, I will have them stabilize me and ship me home.
