The 1911...
Celebrating 100 years of (*&*(^&*^% America's enemy's!
I think the 1911 is the best shooting handgun, I love its consistent trigger and thin grip. A couple of months ago American Rifleman did an article about MOH recipients that used it, it was quite an extensive list. John Browning certainly designed a pistol that can perform in the most challenging of conditions.

John Browning was an absolute genius, he designed just about the perfect pistol in the early 20th century.

Gran Tarino, good movie. Nothing says don't f*** with me like the business end of a 1911.

Nice. Haven't shot a 1911 yet. I'd like to try a Hi Power too. What are your thoughts on those Hattie.

The hi power is quite good, but I prefer the 1911's grip.
If you haven't shot one its going to take a bit of practice to get proficient. The .45ACP is a bit snappy.

My favorite pistol. Love the pictures too. Thanks for posting Hattie.
My Dad carried one in WWII on Okinawa. When he mustered out back in the States he was going to try to sneak it out and when in line he got nervous and gave it to the guy behind him in line. That guy got out with it and Dad didn't have the heart to ask for it back. What I wouldn't give to have that right now! I have owned a 1926 civilian model and it was still a very slick operating piece. If you are only going to own one pistol my vote is for the Ruger Mark II .22. If you're going to have more, one of them should be a 1911 in .45 ACP.

I always heard the 1911 was pretty hard to hit anything with. Most military types said things like "you might have to throw it at the enemy to hit him" and things like that.
Am I wrong? And wouldn't you sprain your wrist if you try to practice enough with it to get proficient?

The original ones had sights that were less than great, and the original triggers sometimes weren't the best. These issues have been fixed on all but the cheapest current production models. Also, I think the recoil is overstated. The first handgun I ever shot (when I was 17) was a 1911, and I didn't find the recoil to be too much. My Glock 23 kicks considerably harder, chiefly because the frame's made of plastic and the unloaded weight is MUCH less than a 1911.

I believe most of the inaccuracy reputation comes from the Vietnam era when new recruits were taking target practice with pistols that had been sitting in warehouses since WWII/Korea. And they were probably pretty worn out when they were put into storage.

At the distance most people pull a pistol to deliver death and misery, sights are an ornament. Sights are for the shooting range to impress friends. Learn to pull, rack and squeeze in a dark room with a shadowy target moving toward you. I love the 1911, but I have a revolver for the bed table.
