I can honestly say I never heard anyone say they voted for him because of his race. Not one single time.
On the other hand, I cannot remember the number of people who told me they voted against him because of it. |

I have heard a few people say that, although I am not aware of anyone who voted for him solely for that reason. If it had been a close call and the candidates had been indistinguishable except for their race, I would have voted for the black candidate over the white one. To me, there is a benefit to having a black president, but there are plenty of black candidates who would never get my vote.

What is the benefit. Just asking. No ulterior motive.

I almost think that Obama's race is just an easy way for a Tea Party type to say they were voting against him. It saves a lot of thinking and lets you vote Republican without having to go into any reason as to why.
An example.... There are a lot of Redneck types in Oklahoma, but one of our Reps for several years was J. C. Watts. He did a pretty good job since he was mostly a RINO. I am not sure what he is doing these days, but many people here would be happy to vote for him for Governor if he ran as a Republican. |

I think his victory encourages people who wondered whether their kind, so to speak, would ever be fully included in all this county has to offer. It is also tangible evidence that this country has come a long way.

Not only did people vote for Obama because he's black, lots of people voted because there was a black guy on the ticket.
In electing Obama, the country proved that it is not endemically racist. I always thought that would be the case. But the best result of Obama's presidency will be that a generation of young people, no matter their political ideals, will grow up knowing that the race limitation doesn't persist, at least with regard to political leadership contests - lots of young brown people can look at the presidency and see themselves there. A very powerful thing. The absolute worst thing liberals do is paint with a broad brush, that all tea partiers, or republicans, or conservatives are racist. They do so because they don't want to debate on the merits of an argument. They do so because they know that the dirtiest word in the american political lexicon is "racist". It isn't enough to just call opponents motherf****r anymore.

If you think the tea party has evolved because there is a black man in the white house, think again. I know several black people who are quite involved in tea party politics, my inlaws for two and some of their extended family. They see the federal government for what it is, a behemoth that needs taming.

I have been involved with Tea Party types since about 1971.
If you present them with facts they tend to just shut down and claim you don't know what you are talking about. As one of the founding fathers once said, 'Trying to argue with a man who has abandoned reason is like giving medication to the dead.' Anyone remember the 1992 plot to give the Southwest back to Mexico? An early Tea Party argument for voting Republican. Did you know Jimmy Carter was the biggest Cocain smuggler in US history? Ask any one who was a Real American during 1976 and they will tell you all about it. Just yesterday, on the CBS Morning News, Ben Stine made the earthshaking statement that Reganonomics was a sham. I have not seen any Tea Party reaction to his statement yet. I doubt that I ever will. |

A phrase used by one of my sisters encapsulates the mindset: "I've been waiting my whole life to vote for a black person for president." Apparently Jesse wasn't black, I dunno. And I am pleased that the majority elected Obama, though I didn't vote for him. I think it finally shows that the nation is maturing and it's about time. But in truth, 30 years ago I didn't think I'd see it in my lifetime. 20 years ago I heard Colin Powell speak and I thought he'd have a chance at the presidency. Now that's been done once, it can happen again and again. That's a good thing for democracy. I just wish he wasn't a knee-jerk big gov politician. Oh well, half a glass. |

Would you vote for Herman Cain? How about Walter Williams? How about Allan West...especially Allen West? I would vote for any of these before Obama, Romney,Palin or any of them.
