I see them on eBay all the time. I really don't understand the appeal other then the low price. What are they based on? A VW chassis?

I don't understand these either. What is the point, to impress people who don't know any better?

I remember when these were new, and I never could understand the appeal, much less the 70's-era "pimp treatment that made the whole concept look far from a true Mercedes Classic!

Might impress anyone under 8 perhaps...

Wait there was a production run? I thought these were kit cars? (Which are hopefully no longer made)

Back in the '80s I worked with an accountant who owned one of those. We would bust his chops and he would state we had "no class". His dream car was a Stutz. The guy was a real piece of work.

They WERE kit cars, but introduced in the mid-70's...what I meant by "new".

I was up at the Import and Kit Car show at Carlisle, PA this past weekend. Fortunately, I only saw one of them. It appeared to be much smaller than the original. Shut lines were abysmal.
OTOH, there were a number of particularly well-done Kits, especially Porsche speedsters.
My friend brought his Lotus7 replica. He told me that when I had driven it, it had 5 lbs of boost and the ign timing was erratic. He now has the timing sorted out and is running 15 lbs of boost. 14 seconds in 1/4 mile, but the handling is what amazes. It is registered as a Ford Ranger pickup because that vehicle donated most of the recognizable parts--steering column, engine block, trans, and rear.
Also saw a number of rare cars, including 3 copies of a post war DKW 3 cyl 2 stroke sedan. Half a dozen 2CV, a number of DS and SM Citroens. Not a great many MB.
Best Import show in years.
